Work is defined as force acting through a distance. When work is done on the system, the sign of ‘w’ is positive. When the work is done by the system (or done on the surrounding), the sign of work ‘w’ is negative.
The relation of work to the total energy of the system is that ‘work is simply the part of energy change of the system’.
