Chapter 22, Problem 20RE
Interpretation Introduction

Interpretation:

The reason for the statement, “Antimycin A acts as an inhibitor of photosynthesis in the chloroplast,” is to be determined.

Concept introduction:

The electron transport chain in chloroplast consists of a copper-containing molecule called plastocyanin, which links the two photosystems in photosynthesis and it is common in the mitochondrial electron transport.

Chloroplast also contains mobile electron carriers, namely plastoquinone (whose structure is similar to coenzyme Q that is ubiquinone) and pheophytin, which are also common in the mitochondrial electron transport.

The complex of the plant cytochrome, that is, plastocyanin (b6f complex) and the oxidized form of P700 contain two b- type cytochromes and a c-type cytochrome, and these have the structures similar to bc1 complex in the mitochondria.
