Textbook Question
Chapter 23, Problem 1CP
Identify several functions of the respiratory system.
Expert Solution & Answer
Summary Introduction
To identify:
The several functions of the respiratory system.
Concept introduction:
In humans, the gaseous exchange is mediated by a number of tissues and organs that together constitute the respiratory system. The different structures of respiratory system help in uptake of oxygen by the lungs and release of carbon dioxide from lungs into the atmosphere. The oxygen taken inside the body is utilized by the cells in aerobic respiration to generate the energy that run all the cellular activities.
Explanation of Solution
The functions of the respiratory system are as follows:
- It provides vast surface area for exchange of gases between air and circulating blood.
- It moves air to and from the respiratory surface of the lungs along the respiratory passageway.
- It protects the respiratory surface from pathogen, dehydration and temperature fluctuations.
- It helps in detection of odor by the olfactory receptors present in the nasal cavity.
- It helps in production of sound that helps in communication, speaking and singing.
