Chapter 5, Problem 20E.1RQ
Summary Introduction

To define: The catalytic activity of enzymes is important to ensure and regulate cellular metabolism.

Introduction: Enzyme is a biological molecule. In the human body, enzymes assist to accelerate or speed up the chemical reactions. A substrate binds to the enzymes’ active site and is converted to products. In the cell, all metabolic processes need enzyme catalysis in direction to occur at the fast rates that are sufficient to endure life.

Explanation of Solution

Enzymes regulate all the biochemical reactions that happen in living cells. Most of these reactions do not occur at a significant rate in the absence of activation of enzymes. Thus, enzymes catalyze all the characteristics of cellular metabolism. It includes digestion of large molecules of nutrient. For example, carbohydrate, proteins, lipids break down into smaller molecules, transformation, and production of energy that leads to the formation of large molecules, which is significant for the cell variability. Thus, the catalytic activity of the enzyme is essential in regulating the metabolism of the cells.
