The axial skeleton consists of 80 various types of bones which constitute about 40% of the total bones found in the human body. It includes the following bones:
- 1. The skull: It consists in total 20 bones (14 facial and 8 cranial bones).
- 2. Associated bones with the skull: It consists in total 12 bones (6 hyoid bone and 6 auditory ossicles).
- 3. Thoracic cage (It consists in total 24 bones of ribs and sternum).
- 4. The vertebral column (It consists of 24 bones).
