Organize the following terms describing functional types of neurons into a map or outline: afferent, autonomic, brain, central, efferent, enteric, parasympathetic, peripheral, sensory, somatic motor, spinal, sympathetic.
To determine: The outline map of the nervous system describing the functional types of the neurons.
Introduction: The nervous system is a part of the animal body which control and coordinates all the functions by transmitting the signals to and from the different parts of the body.
Answer to Problem 1CC
Pictorial representation: Fig 1 represents the components of the nervous system.
Fig 1: The outline map of the nervous system.
Explanation of Solution
The nervous system is divided into two major parts, the central nervous system, and the peripheral nervous system. The central nervous system consists of two parts the spinal cord and the brain. The peripheral nervous system has two divisions the efferent neurons (motor) and the afferent neurons (sensory). The afferent division carries the information from the sensory receptors or the sensory organs to the central nervous system while the efferent division carries the impulses from the central nervous system to the peripheral organs. The efferent division consists of two components which are the somatic nervous system and the autonomic nervous system. The somatic nervous system controls the body movement via skeletal muscles, and the autonomic nervous system controls the movement of smooth muscles, cardiac muscles, adipose tissues, and glands. The autonomic nervous system is divided into three parts, parasympathetic nervous system, sympathetic nervous system, and enteric nervous system.
