Concept explainers
Interpretation:
The reason for the cooling of the mixtureof crystallization of acetaminophen in an ice bath needs to be explained.
Concept Introduction:
Crystallization is the process of formation of solid in which atoms or molecules are present in highly organized from to from a structure which is known as crystal. The common method by which crystals can be obtained from a solution is freezing of the solution as it decreases the solubility and precipitation takes place.
Answer to Problem 1Q
The lower temperature causes lower solubility, which in turn promote crystallization of acetaminophen.
Explanation of Solution
Crystallization of a mixture depends in its saturation level. The crystals can also be obtained by decreasing the solubility of the solution.
The lowering of solubility of acetaminophen takes place by cooling the mixture in the ice bath. Due to decrease in the temperature, lowering of temperature takes place which promotes the crystallization of acetaminophen.
