Module 5 assignment one
In this assignment I have identified the following five prevalent factors. The first factor is in the era dimension, would be identified as political events. In this section I noted that Obama granted clemency forty-six prisoners, all nonviolent drug offenders. This action would be the largest single day clemency since the 1960s.
Martyn, A. (2015, October 13).
This section would be beyond our control. The second prevalent factor would be in the organizational dimension and noted as function. In this section of function, it was noted that the United States “Justice Department made a historic move to release 6000 federal drug inmates.” Martyn, A. (2015, October 13).
This dimension is also beyond the suspects’ control in this case. The next prevalent factor noted would be socioeconomic status which is in the external dimension. In this in this dimension it was noted that the defendant was “Too poor to afford a so-called "dope lawyer" for her jury trial, she pleaded not guilty.” Martyn, A. (2015, October 13).
This section can be within our personal control. In the next Loden’s Wheel factor I predicted the prevalent factor to be a relationship status. In this identified factor it was noted that they wanted the defendant "They wanted
her to roll over on a then-Dallas police officer that was a friend of hers, and she refused to do it." Martyn, A. (2015, October 13).
This section is also within our control.
And the final prevalent factor I predicted would be geographic location. In this section it was noted that this case took place in Texas. Location is also within a person's own control. In Dallas' federal courts, few cases have illustrated the arbitrary nature of tough drug sentencing laws more effectively than the case against a woman from Terrell named Sharanda Jones. Martyn, A. (2015, October 13.
The factors I predicted initially were not too hard to find examples of. There were examples within the other reading as well that indicate statements from the defendant in
this case. Another factor I know would be departmental division. Which would include the following information regarding the judges.
"Under the guidelines, which sets a life sentence, mandatory life sentence," Solis said at a hearing in November 1999. "So, Ms.
Jones, it will be the judgment of the court that you be sentenced to the custody of the U.S. Bureau of Prisons for a term of life imprisonment." I was also able to find multiple examples of the initial predicted factors which would include family status where the defendant indicates, "I was numb," Jones said in an interview at the Carswell women's prison here. "I was thinking about my baby. I thought

it can't be real life in prison."
Horwitz, S., & Kahn, N. (2015, July 16).
As well as socioeconomic status where the defendant states. "It was fast money," she says now. "Biggest mistake I ever made." Horwitz, S., & Kahn, N. (2015, July 16).
In this assignment I was able to identify prevalent factors that had bearing and influence
within the case regarding the defendant found during the reading assignments. I was able to find examples of supporting information which were expressed in the writings above. It is quite often that within the criminal justice system there are several factors that usually come into play. One being political events which happen nationally and have bearing on future involvement regarding cases. In the function section each department has their own functions and how they will deal with it and how they support the political events and what decisions are made at a federal level. Socioeconomic status always comes into play because there are always some people who cannot afford attorneys and there are those who cannot and must rely on public defender’s office to provide them with council during their cases. In many instances relationships status come into play regarding how somebody reacts to either the criminal during the commission of a crime, or with the police and their involvement with investigation of the case, or at the judicial level with their relationships with law enforcement and or previous involvement with suspects. Geographic location section there are always different judicial where the districts in different geographic locations make decisions that
are made and govern how the judicial system will operate within certain districts across the country. It also comes into play at the local level.
I think it may have been easier to find specific examples in the readings as that were the
stance that the authors in look the contributions focused on.
