Chapter 1 Assignment 1) Anatomy- Is studying the structure of the body. The word comes from the greek origin and it mean “to cut” or “cutting backwards” (Putting things together by slices) Physiology- Is the science of body functions, that includes the study of homeostasis 2) Chemical level Atoms Inorganic molecules (inorganic chemistry) Organic molecules (Organic chemistry) Cell- basic structural and function units of an organism Tissues- Group of cells that work together to perform a similar function Many different types of cell, they all work to form 4 basic types of tissues. 1. Epithelium 2. Muscle 3. Connective Tissue 4. Nerve Organs- Structures composed of 2 or more different types of tissues They have specific functions and recognizable shapes Organ System- Consists of related organs with a common function Includes all the organs of the mouth, esophagus, stomach intestines, liver, gallbladder and pancreas 11 organ system in the body Organism- Collection of organ system 6 Important life process 1. Metabolism 2. Responsive movement 3. Growth 4. Differentiation 5. Reproduction In health all parts of the body must be functioning together in a process called homeostasis 3) Metabolism- Is the sum of all the catabolic ( breakdown) and anabolic ( building up) chemical processes that occur in the body. 4) Adenosine Triphosphate (ATP)- Energy carrying molecule know as energy currency of life or fuel of life.
5) Anatomical Position- a person who stand erect facing the observer with the head level the eyes facing forward with feet flat on the floor directed forward and the arms at their sides palm down 6) 3 Planes of the body Frontal (Coronal) Sagittal ( Midline) Transverse ( Horizontal) 7) Oblique Planes- pass through the body or organ at an angle Cross-Sectional- Divide the body into superior( upper) and inferior (lower) Longitudinal Section- Section along the long axis of the structure.
