Homo-sapien, homo-erectus, homo-habilis 2. How big are our brains compared to our ancestors? Our brains today are roughly three times larger than those of our early ancestors. 3. What were the advantages of using fire for humans? Fire is a source of warmth and lighting, protects us from predators at night, a way to create more advanced tools, and useful for cooking food. 4. How long ago were hominids using tools and what did they look like? Roughly 2.6 million years ago, the early hominids started using tools in the stone age. These were stone tools that included hammerstones, stone cores, and sharp stone flakes. These tools looked a lot like rocks that were hit together into a rough shape. 5. What are leftover structures in modern humans that had functions in our ancestors? Structures that have no apparent function are called vestigial structures. An example in humans is the appendix, as we all have one, but none of us need it.
