ANTH 1200 Lab 3 Assignment - “The First Human - Millennium Man” Instructions: Stream and watch the video link for this assignment and answer the following questions. Points to remember: The questions are simple enough to be answered in one sentence. Therefore, answer each question with one complete sentence only. Your responses must be based on the video itself and not outside sources. The video is about a fossil hominin nicknamed “Millenium Man.” The technical name for this fossil is “Orrorin Tugenensis.” Sometimes people in the video use the nickname, sometimes they use the technical name, but both names refer to the same fossil. If you use the subtitles/close captions, be aware that they are self generated from the audio and often inaccurate (and sometimes humorously so) Questions from video: 1. Rather than dating the fossils themselves, what was the initial approach to finding out how old the Orrorin fossils were? T he initial approach to finding out how old the Orrorin fossils were was by looking at which layer of lava formation did the fossil come from. 2. Homo habilis is considered to be the first member of Genus Homo. How long ago did Homo Habilis live? Homo Habilis were alive 2 million years ago . 3. What was the opportunity given to Donald Johansen with the discovery of Australopithecus afarensis (Lucy)? The opportunity given to Donald Johansen with the discovery of Lucy was to describe a new species of human ancestors. 4. What was the 'disturbing possibility’ in regards to the extensive dating process of the Orrorin fossils? The “disturbing possibility” in regards to the dating process of the Orrorin fossils is that there were many discoveries that were made before Orrorin in which scientists thought that they were much older than they actually were. 5. What was the final date assessment from Japan regarding how old the Orrorin fossils are? The final date assessment from Japan regarding how old the Orrorin fossils are is between 5.8 and 6.1 million years.
6. What is the remarkable feature that human beings have in regards to identifying fossils that are human ancestors? Or, what human trait were researchers trying to prove Orrorin had? The remarkable feature that human beings have in regards to identifying fossils that are human ancestors is seeing if it was able to walk on two feet. Humans are bipedal. 7. What hidden feature of the fossil could provide the evidence needed to demonstrate Orrorin was a human ancestor? The groove in the thigh bone could provide the evidence needed to demonstrate Orrorin was a human ancestor or scientists can look at the neck of the femur. 8. What was a distinguishing feature of the environment that Orrorin lived in? Orrorin was an omnivore. They were in an environment where trees played a major role in how they lived. 9. In the discussion about robotic recreations of both bipeds and quadripeds, why was it easier to build a biped robot over a quadriped robot? It was easier to build a biped robot over a quadruped robot because the complexity of coordinating the legs was reduced. Also the mechanical complexity was reduced. 10. The video states that the old idea was that bipedalism was a result of a shift in the environment from dense forest to open savannas (plains) about 3.5 million years ago. Why does the discovery or Orrorin prove this idea wrong? The discovery of Orrorin proves this idea wrong because the discovery showed that the idea of bipedalism is an adaptation that arose in a more frosted environment and was a pre adaptation in many ways when they did move out onto the savanna grasslands.
