School Board Meeting - Field Experience College of Education, Grand Canyon University POS: 500-0502 U.S. and Arizona Constitutions for Teacher Candidates
2 I was privileged to attend the Sugar-Salem School Board Meeting held on December 4th, 2023, at 4:00 PM. The meeting began with a solemn prayer led by Greg Stoddard, after which the attendees recited the Pledge of Allegiance. The meeting covered a variety of agenda items, including student data, students of the month, teacher awards, partner awards, Digger highlights, superintendent reports, building level reports, AG science presentations, high school elective curriculum adoption, new para program, CTE admin position, and city roads. Mrs. Robinson presented a detailed report about the percentage of seniors applying for college scholarships and FAFSA. Currently, 91% of all seniors have applied for scholarships, and the school expects 100% of seniors to use them by the beginning of February. It was inspiring to see the school's dedication to continuing education. The meeting also included presenting the Students of the Month awards, which recognized outstanding students from the regular public school and the alternative schools in our district. It was an exciting and enjoyable experience. The meeting attendees also discussed possible changes in the road department that could affect bussing and access to our upcoming tennis courts and soccer field. While the report did not provide a comprehensive list of attendees, all Sugar-Salem Public Schools Board members must attend school board meetings. Although several individuals attended, not all speakers were featured on the meeting agenda. Here's a list of the necessary school board members and school representatives who were present at the gathering: Board of Trustees Juliane Blaser-Zone I Greg Stoddard-Zone Ian Luke- Zone III

The entire board was present to discuss and vote on the agenda items. The superintendent provided guidance, while visitors were only allowed to observe unless they had contacted the school beforehand to speak in public. Other audience members were present to offer support or answer questions regarding inspections, particularly when discussing buildings and city roads, to ensure the meeting ran smoothly and covered helpful subjects for the educational system. The discussions during the board meeting were crucial to the efficient operation of the educational system. The board members carefully considered each issue to improve the district's operations and ensure students received an excellent education. I had the opportunity to attend a formal gathering where the superintendent, an invited speaker, and a few distinguished school board members delivered informative presentations. The speeches were conducted with decorum and covered essential topics such as agenda items, nomination processes, board member salaries, and voting procedures. Becky, our treasurer, presented on budgeting and funding, while the guest speaker shared valuable insights on fieldwork during his speech. The meeting taught me about nominations, voting, and determining remuneration for board members and visitors' field expertise. One topic that created a lot of excitement in our district was the launch of the new para program. This groundbreaking initiative allows seniors to earn certification as paraprofessionals within the

4 elementary school and gain hands-on experience during school hours while getting paid. It's a remarkable opportunity for our students to explore various aspects of the special education field. To participate in the program, students must undergo a background check, complete HIPAA documentation, and meet all the standard requirements for any new employee. Our business and accounting department leaders, Jocelyn Hobbs and Jaron Bean, recently shared some fantastic news. We're delighted to announce the launch of a new program that allows students to earn a valuable certification. Under this innovative program, every student can earn certification with a digital seal. This digital seal recognizes the completion of QuickBooks, an essential accounting software used by businesses across various industries. The accreditation will be acknowledged within our school and carry weight in the community and other colleges. It will showcase the student's proficiency in QuickBooks, a vital skill required for any business accounting role. The district is confident that this new program will benefit our students and help them stand out in a competitive job market. Attending school board meetings is an excellent opportunity for individuals in the community to come together and work towards providing high-quality education to our students. Through my participation in these meetings, I gained valuable insights into the school board's role in establishing policies and guidelines for the district, as well as voting on and ratifying decisions that can significantly impact the entire school system. Having participated in numerous school board meetings, I have come to appreciate the significance of adhering to established policies and procedures when making decisions that can have far-reaching implications for the school system. Furthermore, I have realized the critical nature of fostering effective collaboration between the board and the superintendent in advancing the interests of the school system. In
5 summary, my involvement in these meetings has afforded me a deeper understanding of the education system's intricate and multifaceted nature and the school board's pivotal role in ensuring its success.
