_____________________________ Stamped from the Beginning Quiz1 Directions: Answer each question and make sure to use quotes from the reading to support your answers. Each question is worth two points. 1. After reading the “Preface,” what is Kendi’s assessment of “dual and dueling” history narratives? 2. Define these three key types: anti-racist, segregationist, and assimilationist. anti-racism: promotes racial tolerance and opposes racism segregation: separating people based on characteristics such as skin color and other defining features assimilation: When cultures and ethnic Traits are absorbed into the majority of society 3. How does Kendi explain the way people perceive the arrival of racial discrimination? Is it the product or the catalyst? Explain According to Kendi, people perceive racial discrimination as a group of ignorant and hateful individuals who develop racist ideas and act upon them. I believe that racial discrimination is a catalyst rather than a product due to America's history of extreme race relations. (end of page 15) 4. Why did he perceive himself, before writing this book, as peddling racist ideas? He perceived himself in his book as peddling racist ideas because he was putting himself in the racist ideas mindset to explain and educate his peers and others about the history of blacks, modern slavery, and how blacks can go about things. (16) 5. Kendi chooses to title the first chapter “Human Hierarchy.” What purpose does it serve within the chapter? The chapter name, “Human Hierarchy,” comes from the concept that this first chapter contains. In this chapter, Kendi talked about how Puritans learned rationales, which started to make them believe that another race was superior to the other. Ethiopians started to despise black skin due to them normalizing Greek slaveholding. (20-22)
6. Why might discussing “racism” in the ancient world be considered a trick question? I think discussing “racism” could be a trick question because it is a very sensitive topic and opinions should not be taken lightly. It is like talking about religion with strangers. 7. How do pseudo-science and religion play a role in the justification of ideas within the first chapter? Pseudo-science was misunderstood, the time was extremely flawed, and the conclusions that they made were far from the truth. To support their claims that white people were superior, they tried to link their discoveries to the Bible, proving that we were created by Him. However, they interpreted the verses to support their agenda. 8. The second chapter explains the manner in which the Portuguese played a historical role in racism. What was that role? The role that the Portuguese played was framing African-American slave trading ventures as missionary expeditions. That historical role played a huge role in racism. (28) 9. How does Columbus play a role in the second chapter? Columbus plays a role in the second chapter of how colonization began and how America was “discovered” by European and Portuguese settlers after Christopher got married to King Henry's daughter. (30) 10. How does Bartolomé de Las Casas play a role in the second chapter? Bartolome de las Casas played a role in the second chapter because Las Casas suggested importing African slaves for labor to replace the native Americans and putting the natives somewhere else. Las Casas also believes that blacks are “strong” and “beastly”. That's why blacks were given hard labor. (31)
