Greetings Class and Professor I spent most of my formative years in the Buffalo and Sheridan regions of Wyoming, areas near Montana, just 40 miles to the north. This geographical location offered me firsthand exposure to American Indian culture, especially since my best friend in 3rd and 4th grades was a Sioux Indian named Clayton. Through my friendship and education in my early years, I gained a personal understanding of the culture and challenges faced by American Indians. As I embark on this course, my aim is to broaden my historical understanding of American Indian life. While many are familiar with figures like Pocahontas, fewer might know she is buried just outside Lander, Wyoming, a location not far from where I grew up. I've had the opportunity to visit her gravesite, and I hope to contribute my own perspectives and facts to this class. Additionally, I'm eager to explore on an academic level, the demographic shifts that have affected American Indian communities over time, from their initial abundance to their later decline. I joined the service in 2001 and now after 20 years of dedicated military service, my husband and I have decided to retire and embark on a new chapter in our lives. We chose to settle down in the bustling and opportunity-rich DC area to focus on our career aspirations. I'm currently pursuing a bachelor’s degree in management, taking my leadership skills and discipline into the academic sphere. This is an exciting transition for me; it's a chance to blend my real-world experience with educational prowess to open doors to future opportunities. The DC area offers the perfect backdrop for this next phase in my life, filled with possibilities that align with my career and educational goals. As I continue my journey, I'm enthusiastic about the road ahead and its challenges and opportunities. 1. The Sioux, or Dakota, tribes are primarily associated with the Great Plains, which cover areas of the United States such as North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, and Minnesota. However, their influence and interactions did extend to Montana, especially during times of westward expansion and conflict with other tribes or U.S. forces. One fact about the Sioux in Montana is their involvement in the Battle of the Little Bighorn, also known as Custer's Last Stand, which took place in 1876 near the Little Bighorn River in Montana Territory. The battle was a significant engagement between combined forces of the Lakota Sioux, Northern Cheyenne, and Arapaho tribes against the 7th Cavalry Regiment of the United States Army. The Native American forces, led by leaders like Sitting Bull and Crazy Horse, scored a decisive victory, demonstrating both their military prowess and the unity of various tribes in resistance against U.S. expansion. 2. There is one concern in relation to American Indians in the Dakota Access Pipeline (DAPL). The pipeline was planned to transport crude oil across several U.S. states but became a subject of major protests due to its crossing of land considered sacred by the Standing Rock Sioux Tribe. The tribe also expressed concerns about potential water contamination from the pipeline, as it would cross under Lake Oahe, a water source for the community. Protests at Standing Rock gained national and international attention, bringing together indigenous groups and environmental activists. Various legal battles have taken place, and the future of the pipeline has been under review by U.S. federal agencies.
