Part I – Listening Log The Firebird, Scene 2 (1910), Igor Stravinsky 1. This song was used as an example of dynamics. 2. Dynamics is defined as degrees of loudness or softness in music. 3. This song was a good example of dynamics. 4. I personally did like this piece. During this scene of the ballet the hero triumphs and gets engaged to a princess and the music during this scene really does a good job in making you believe that you are hearing the victory of a hero and the story ending with a happily ever after. C‐Jam Blues (1942), Duke Ellington and His Famous Orchestra 1. This song was used as an example of tone colors. 2. Tone colors is defined as the quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another. 3. This song was a good example of tone colors. 4. I personally did like this. I can see why people during this time when they would hear this song, they would start heading to the dance floor. I also like when a new musician gets added to the mix, they get a few seconds to improvise and then the rest of the band accompanies that new instrument. The Young Person’s Guide to the Orchestra, Op.* 34 (1946), Benjamin Britten 1. This song was used as an example of tone colors. 2. Tone colors is defined as the quality of sound that distinguishes one instrument or voice from another. 3. This song was a good example of tone colors. 4. I personally did like this. I enjoyed how each section of the orchestra had its moment to showcase the different instruments it had and displays the different pitches and ranges of each section of the orchestra. Prelude in E Minor for Piano, Op. 28, No. 4 (1839), Frédéric Chopin 1. This song was used as an example of harmony. 2. Harmony is defined as how chords are constructed and how they follow each other. 3. This song was a good example of harmony. 4. I personally did not like this piece. This piece was just not my cup of tea it sounds very dull to me and sounds like music that would be played at a funeral. Farandole from L’Arlésienne Suite No. 2 (1879), Georges Bizet 1. This song was used as an example of homophonic texture and polyphonic texture. 2. Homophonic texture is defined as describing music in which one main melody is accompanied by chords. Polyphonic texture is defined as a performance of two or more melodic lines of relatively equal interest at the same time. 3. This song was a good example of homophonic texture and polyphonic texture. 4. I personally did like this piece. I like how you can hear the different musical textures in this piece very clearly and that they each complement each other.
Dance of the Reed Pipes from Nutcracker Suite (1892), Peter Ilyich Tchaikovsky 1. This song was used as an example of melody. 2. Melody is defined as a series of single tones that add up to a recognizable whole. 3. This song was good example of melody. 4. I personally did not like piece. I do not like this piece because to me it just sounds boring. There is just no exciting element to this piece. Bourrée from Suite in E Minor for Lute (probably around 1710), Johann Sebastian Bach 1. This song was used as an example of rhythm. 2. Rhythm is defined as the ordered durations of sounds and silences. 3. This song was a good example of rhythm. 4. I personally did not like piece. It is bit difficult to the A and B sections because the gentleman is playing so fast.
