Critical Thinking:
Identifying Barriers Worksheet
Review the definition of critical thinking, the barriers to critical thinking, and the 3 stages of cognitive development in college students in Ch.
1 of THiNK:
Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday Life before you respond. Write a 75- to 125-word response to each of the following prompts.
Enter your
response on a new line. 1.
What is the role of critical thinking in your daily life? Consider your personal, professional, and school life in your response.
Review the definition of critical thinking in Ch. 1 of THiNK: Critical Thinking and Logic Skills for Everyday Life.
Critical thinking in everyday life is something
that is done unknowingly, since it is thinking through a problem and coming up with a solution. In personal life critical thinking can be used when making a
decision big or small and figuring a way to solve the present circumstance.
In professional life critical thinking is used to troubleshoot problems that arise;
although it is the same thing everyday problems still arise.
In school I currently use critical thinking to find the time in order to get work done. 2.
Provide
an example of a situation in your life in which critical thinking could be used. Why would critical thinking be helpful in that situation
In my current line of work I am a busser at a restaurant, though I also know how to serve, bartend, cook food, dishwas, be a host and togo host at this said
restaurant. With knowing how to do all these things people ask me for a lot of favors, and I often find myself doing all of these jobs all at once sometimes. I have
to do a lot of critical thinking, and a lot of quick thinking on the fly because the restaurant business is a fast one, with little room for errors. I find myself having
to think through problems that arise, and often I have to think a couple of steps ahead of myself so that I can accomplish all that I am tasked with, With critical
thinking I am able to discern the best course of action to get things done the right ways, and the most efficient way so that I can be fast and get everything I need
to done. 3.
Identify 3 to 4 barriers to critical thinking that you can relate to. Describe the barriers in your own words. Provide an example of a situation
where you have, or might in the future, encounter each barrier. Note:
You do not need to describe how you can overcome the barriers you identified. You
will have that opportunity in a future assignment. Focus on the barriers to critical thinking and examples that are meaningful to you.
The three barriers that I
am often faced with are avoidance, anger, and denial.
Avoidance is when people are so passionate about their own opinion they avoid the opinions of
others, this could happen in instances of talking about religion, politics, or ethics.
Anger is how people respond to others'
points of view if they don’t
agree with it, allowing their emotions to show rather than being reasonable. This could happen in any disagreement that two people have a passion for, or in
disagreement with.
Finally is denial, it is when presented with facts people will deny the truth even with the facts presented, this could happen when
someone is too enlightened to a possible truth that they thought they knew, but in actuality they know little about. 4.
Which of the 3 stages of cognitive
development (dualism, relativism, commitment) are you at? Explain why you placed yourself in this stage of development. How might you move to the next stage

if you are at stage 1 or 2, or how you might maintain stage 3?
I believe that I am in stage 3;
the commitment stage. This is because I feel that I am able to
make choices based on both reason and the best evidence that I have at the moment. I do not question authority or follow it blindly, rather I use my own
knowledge and outside sources to accurately make choices. While there is no stage that follows this one, there is still progress that can be made as I continue to
use critical thinking throughout my life. It is tentative work to make choices not just because someone in authority says to, but because I believe it is right. It takes
work and detailed thought to be independent in my thinking and decision making. To maintain this stage I would think that I would just need to continue in this
current set that I have, but to also have an open ear and mind as to how I can continually improve my mindset
