SEL-7200: Implementing SEL in the Modern Classroom
Dr. Jennifer Aniano
March 28, 2024
Fultz (2023) says that building authentic relationships takes time and that in the
classroom the relationships from students cannot be rushed. In building authentic relationships
with students, it is important that teachers embrace who they are so that the students will learn to
appreciate it. It would also help to ask students different questions as it pertains to their lives and
the things that they may like. The authenticity behind the building of these relationships will not
only support the academic performance of the students, but also help in fighting feelings of
sadness or loneliness if the child is experiencing it. As an early childhood education professional, there are several ways in which I can
improve my relationship with the students that I encounter and interact with daily. Being that I
work with children who are ages 3- to 5-years old, it is important that I am approachable when
trying to build and improve a relationship with both the students and their parents. I believe that
being approachable and creating an open environment will allow the families and students to not
be fearful of coming to me with any questions or concerns that they may have. Another thing that
I would do to improve the relationship would be to actively listen. Rogers & Schainker (n.d.)
says that “when we engage in active listening, we are making a conscious effort to thoroughly
understand what someone is trying to tell us through their words and non-verbal messages.” In
using active listening skills, this would show the students and parents that I value and respect
their ideas and feelings. Lastly, but certainly not least, I can remain consistent in all that I do to
improve relationships. In remaining consistent as it relates to classroom rules, expectations, and
so much more, this shows that I am remaining fair in maintaining a positive, stable environment.
I believe that the impact of strong relationships will set the foundation for not only how
the school year will go, but also on how well students develop as it relates to their academic
performance and how they learn to process things in a social emotional manner. Being that this
school year is almost over, going into the new school year I will have to be fully dedicated and
put forth continuous effort when it comes to student relationships, as well as relationships with
all other involved parties. One practice that I plan to put into place at the beginning of the next
school year is to focus on social capital. Grabmeler (2018) says that social capital is “the name
scientists give to the network of relationships between school officials, teachers, parents and the
community that builds trust and norms promoting academic achievement.” In focusing on social
capital, I would be able to implement practices such as engaging in regular communication and
being responsive to the needs of students, creating and maintaining a positive environment, and
allow students to have a choice in activities that will support and promote their learning. These
practices I believe are critical in helping my students and their families feel valued when they
enter my classroom. With the curriculum that the program that I work for uses, which is the High
Scope Curriculum, a lot of activities are focused on the strengths of the students as they engage
in play and lessons that are centered around them. The curriculum also allows students to have a
choice in the activities that they would like to do, which is a practice that I will continue to use as
I have been because it has been very beneficial to me developing positive relationships with my
students. In holding myself accountable in making sure that I incorporate the previously mentioned
practices with my students, I will make sure that I am being intentional in all that I am doing
with my students on a daily basis. In being intentional in my teaching, my focus is strictly on my
students and improving their performance in all necessary areas of development. In measuring
the improvement of relationships, I will monitor the feedback that I get from students when we
are engaged in activities, and I will also pay attention to and observe their behavior within the
classroom as it relates to incidents regarding discipline.
