Self-Reliant and Arrogant Essay By: Kaylyn Whitacre Is there an appropriate balance between being “true to yourself” and caring for yourself while also trying not to slip into a worldview of self-centeredness? If so how can we achieve this balance? That is what we will be looking into how this balance works and how we can live it out. We first learned about this idea in the beginning of this module. This module was very much focused on this idea of self-love written in the Civil War era. It was shift of focus from spiritual “other” (God) towards a more social “other” (community). It stemmed from a self- centered belief that I still have a significant influence on the American culture. This belief can do two things: “foster a healthy spirit of self-reliance or breed dangerous arrogance.” (University) I think that we as Christians tend to get self-reliant and self-centered love mixed up. Christians were made to do works that glorify God, and we are told to do that in everything we do, “So whether you eat or drink or whatever you do, do it all for the glory of God.” (“1 Corinthians 10:31 NIV - - Bible Gateway”) How can we discern the differences between self-reliance and self-centeredness? As Christians we should always have God on our mind no matter what we are doing. But, when we are intentional about our thinking towards everyday actions it helps us become more Christ like. If we were to do everything for ourselves that would slowly change us into self- centered people. However, we can reach a healthy balance of caring for ourself and caring for others while still have the Heavenly Father on our mind intentionally will help us to become self- reliant.
In conclusion, we have looked at ways we can achieve self-reliance and stay away from self-centeredness. If we keep a heavenly mindset and a healthy balance of caring for others and ourselves, we can obtain this perfect balance of self-reliance. We can all work on this a little bit at a time but see big changes in our lives come from it.
