Benchmark - Intake Interview and Summary
The field supervisor (FS) expressed high praise for my performance. She indicated that she would evaluate my performance within the range of Low A to high B (personal communication, 2023). FS acknowledged that although I still have much to learn and develop, my interviewing skills have improved from the beginning of my field placement. FS emphasized the need to cultivate self-assurance in my interactions with patients. FS commends me for acknowledging and validating the patient's emotions and expressing a desire to gain further insight into their individuality (personal communication, 2023). I clarified to FS that it is necessary for me to devote further effort towards enhancing my professionalism. Although I am aware that in an actual scenario, I would not find it humorous, it is advisable to cultivate this behavior at present. The main lessons learned from this activity are the importance of cultivating patience, developing a welcoming demeanor, and enhancing confidence in explaining information to others. FS also observed an excessive number of movements from me, such as scratching my head and adjusting my clothing. She recommended restricting such movements since they may serve as a source of distraction for the patient or client (personal communication, 2023).
Effective communication is essential in field placement. It is evident my field site com has various professions, including doctors, nurses, security guards, and social workers, and are required to engage in regular and courteous communication with their supervisors and colleagues. It is crucial to keep them updated on my progress, difficulties, and accomplishments. I observed that the social workers engage in active and attentive listening. I saw that the attending physicians consistently exhibit assertive communication, maintaining a pleasant demeanor but effectively conveying their seriousness when necessary. I require the ability to interact with the patients, colleagues, and other stakeholders effectively and suitably while
