Where Are The Planets? Activity Report Name______ Date __________________ In this activity, we will be using a free smartphone app called Star Chart. This fun app simulates the sky on your smartphone screen, and shows the locations of the planets and stars in real-time. 1. Install Star Chart onto your smartphones (versions are available for Android and iPhone). 2. Open Star Chart and double-tap the screen so that you see the “gear” in the lower right corner of the screen. 3. Switch “AR” mode to “0” which is OFF. AR mode stands for “augmented reality”. Also, turn OFF “Auto Tour”. 4. Under “Display Settings”, and then “Constellations”, turn on “Lines” and “Latin Names”. Under Labels, turn on “Constellations”. 5. Click on “Back” until you get back to the sky view mode. Then click on the Magnifying Glass to open the Search menu. 6. Click on Mercury. What constellation is Mercury in right now? Now double-click the screen so that the “gear” appears again, and click on it. Switch AR mode to “1” which is ON. Now click “Back” to get back to the sky view screen. You and now seeing the sky as it really would look at night in any direction. Where is Mercury? Mercury is between the sun and mars 7. Repeat Step 6 for all of the objects listed in the Table, and fill in the Table. PLANET Constellation Mercury Virgo Venus Leo Mars Virgo Jupiter Aries Saturn Aquarius Neptune Pisces Uranus Aries Pluto Aquarius Proxima Centauri Centaurus 8. Submit the completed Lab Report into the Lab Dropbox !
