Directions: The following story is about a crime solved through biotechnological techniques. The techniques used are DNA fingerprinting and polymerase chain reaction (PCR). DNA fingerprinting is a technique in which an individual’s DNA is analyzed to reveal the pattern of particular short nucleotide sequences. This pattern is claimed to be unique to the individual concerned and can thus be used for identification purposes. Polymerase chain reaction, on the other hand, is a technique used to replicate a DNA fragment so as to produce many copies of a particular DNA sequence. Why do you think there’s a need to generate several copies of the DNA? You will learn the answers to this as you go through the story. Read the story carefully and answer the questions that follow.

ANSWER THE QUESTION PROPERLY
INTRODUCTION :
Pipetting is one of the most important skill of a cell and molecular biologist. This technique is needed because you will be working in the molecular scale. You will be measuring minute amount of liquid and other toxic / and non-toxic materials. You will also be working with DNA samples and other materials that must be transferred from one micro-container into another. This activity will help you develop your skills in pipetting as a major skill to be acquired in this subject matter.
As your laboratory’s demand for accuracy and precision grows, so does the importance of understanding and developing an optimal pipetting technique. Walk through the following 12 steps that will bring your pipetting to the next level, and see how many you have already mastered and integrated as part of your everyday pipetting routine.
Step 1: Pre-wet the pipette
Step 2: Immerse the tip to the proper depth during aspiration
Step 3: Pause consistently after…

Observing Bacteria in Colonies
In fresh or saltwater habitats, cyanobacteria will appear (without a microscope) as very
small green lines (as can be seen in this video). Observe the following images of
cyanobacteria colonies under 100x and 400x magnification with a light microscope:
Anabaena sp. 100x magnification
Anabaena sp. 400x magnification
As you can see, cyanobacteria grow as two different types of cells: those that are
photosynthetic (fixing carbon dioxide to make sugars), and heterocysts (that fix nitrogen to
make proteins and nucleic acids). Although these cells are genetically identical, each is
able to accomplish this via differences in gene expression, a key concept in biology you will
continue exploring this quarter. In the 400x magnification image, you should be able to
clearly see two…
