Pregnancy and Childbirth Conception: - Release of Egg and Sperm o Ovary releases egg -> egg travels through fallopian tube o If egg is not fertilized - disintegrates in about 2 days o If egg is fertilized – it implants in the uterus in about 5 days - Egg and Sperm Unite o Conception occurs when 1 sperm penetrated the egg o Fertilized egg is called a zygote o In 5-7 days, the zygote implants on the lining of the uterus (or is dispelled with the menstrual cycle) Embryonic Period: The First 8 Weeks - Cephalocaudal development (sefolacawdull) o Head develops first, then the lower body - Most major organ systems have formed Fetal Support System - Placenta o How the body creates nutrients o Distributes nutrients into the unbilical cord - Amniotic sac and amniotic fluid o Provide cushioning for the baby - Umbilical cord o How the body provides the nutrients to the baby Pregnancy Tests - Detect a hormone secreted by the placenta - Most accurate pregnancy test is ClearBlue Spontaneous Abortion (Miscarriage) - Pregnancy terminates through natural causes - Preclinical pregnancies - about 50% results in spontaneous abortion - Clinically diagnosed pregnancies - 20-25% result in spontaneous abortion - Most occur in the first trimester Stages of Pregnancy - First trimester (first 12 weeks) o Increase in estrogen and progesterone o Increase in vaginal discharge o Breast swelling and sensitivity o Nipples darken o Possible nausea (morning sickness) o Fatigue/sleepiness - Second trimester (weeks 13 – 26)
o Breast growth o Edema – water retention and swelling o Fetal growth produces a noticeable bulge o Quickening – fetus can be felt moving - Third trimester (weeks 27 – 38) o Increased size of uterus and fetus puts pressure on other organs – results in some discomfort o Hearburn o Frequent urination o Sleeplessness o Braxton-Hicks contractions
