CYU 11 1. Describe how a neurohormone secreted from the hypothalamus stimulates the secretion of a hormone from the anterior pituitary The neurohormone produced by the hypothalamus is the anterior pituitary regulating hormone. The anterior pituitary regulating hormone controls the secretions of a hormone from anterior pituitary. Hypothalamic hormone that regulates anterior pituitary secretion are known as releasing and release inhibiting hormones as they stimulate or inhibit the release of various hormones from anterior pituitary. The releasing hormones are thyrotropin releasing hormone (TRH), gonadotrophin releasing hormone (GnRH), corticotropin releasing hormone (CRH), growth hormone releasing hormone (GHRH), and prolactin releasing factor (PRF). The inhibiting hormones are growth hormone inhibiting hormones (Somatostatin) and prolactin inhibiting hormones (PIH). • Thyrotropin Releasing Hormone (TRH)- stimulates thyroid stimulating hormone (TSH) • Gonadotrophin Releasing Hormone (GnRH)- stimulates LH and FSH. • Corticotropin Releasing Hormone (CRH) - stimulates secretion of adrenocorticotropic hormone ( ACTH) • Growth Hormone Releasing Hormone ( GHRH)- stimulates Growth Hormone from somatotophs of anterior pituitary • Prolactin Releasing Factor (PRF)- stimulates prolactin synthesis and secretions. • Growth Hormone Inhibiting Hormones (Somatostatin)- inhibits secretion of growth hormone. • Prolactin Inhibiting Hormones ( PIH)- inhibits secretion of prolactin, TSH and growth hormone. The hypothalamus is connected with anterior pituitary gland by means of blood vessels called Portal Hypophyseal vessels. The blood vessels arise from capillaries on ventral surface of hypothalamus that derive blood from the superior hypophyseal artery. The capillaries drain into the sinusoidal portal hypophyseal vessels. The long portal hypophyseal vessels carry blood down the pituitary stalk to anterior lobe of the pituitary where they end in another set of capillaries. The anterior pituitary regarding hormone are synthesized in small hypothalamic neuron. The axon terminals of the neurons contact with capillary network in the hypothalamus and these hormones releasing to capillaries that reach anterior pituitary via portal hypophyseal vessels.
2. Describe how a neurohormone secreted from the hypothalamus stimulates the secretion of a hormone from the posterior pituitary. Give a specific example in your answer. The hypothalamus is anatomically and functionally linked with the anterior and posterior pituitary. They are closely related because of the portal system of blood supply. The superior, medial, and inferior hypophyseal arteries provide arterial blood supply to the median eminence and the pituitary. For example, neurosecretory cells in the hypothalamus release oxytocin (OT) or ADH into the posterior lobe of the pituitary gland in response to signals from the same hypothalamic neurons. The hormones are then released from the axon terminals into the bloodstream.
