Report
Pancreas You have been asked to participate in a community health fair roundtable about the endocrine system. In your response to this week’s discussion, address the following questions for your assigned endocrine gland. Then, throughout the week, review your classmates’ posts and comment as appropriate on at least two other posts per the Discussion Guidelines. Provide a brief overview of your assigned endocrine gland, including its function and the major hormones produced or released by this gland. The pancreas is in the abdomen behind the stomach, this gland contains both exocrine (secretion of digestive enzymes) and endocrine cells, these cells occur in small clusters called pancreatic islets, these clusters contain three hormone producing cells (Goodenough & McGuire, 2016). 1. Glucagon 2. Insulin 3. Somatostatin Glucagon increases glucose levels in the blood. Glucagon is able to do this by prompting cells of the liver to increase conversion of glycogen to glucose. Glucagon stimulates the liver to form glucose from lactic and amino acids (Goodenough & McGuire, 2016). If a person was experiencing an excess of glucagon, they would become hyperglycemic, meaning that there is an overabundance of glucose in the blood. On the opposite side of that if a person was experiencing a deficiency in glucagon they would become
hypoglycemic, meaning they have an underwhelming amount of glucose in their blood (professional, 2022). Diabetes Mellitus is one of the diseases that would result from hyper/hypo secretion. There are four different types of diabetes mellitus type 1, type 2 gestational and “other specific types” all of these different types are characterized by issues with regulations in glucose (Goodenough& McGuire, 2016). If I were giving Sia advice on treatment and prevention I would need to know what type of diabetes she was diagnosed with. She would need to definitely watch her diet, exercise, and keep track of both her HbA1c and her blood sugar levels. References: Goodenough, J., & McGuire, B. A. (2016).
