Explore the stages of decomposition in Knoxville, Tennessee. As you click through the
animation, answer the following questions about each day. Please type your answers directly into
this Word document, save the file with the title “Your Name
PMI”, and submit it using the
assignment dropbox on Moodle.
Note: Characteristics for each day should include any evidence of insect activity, signs of
decomposition, odor, animal activity, etc.
1.
Click on the area of the map for Knoxville, TN. What is the climate here? (1 point)
Warm and moist
2.
What characteristics are apparent on Day 1? What stage of decomposition does this
represent? (1 point)
Flies and eggs in the nose and mouth of the face are apparent on day 1 representing the
fresh stage of decomposition
3.
What is the life cycle of a blowfly? (1 point)
Pupa, young adult, mature egg-laying female, eggs, first stage larva, second stage larva,
third stage larva
4.
What characteristics are apparent on Day 2? What stage of decomposition does this
represent? (1 point)
The number of flies increased, and more eggs are being laid on parts of the body and are
beginning to hatch representing the fresh stage of decomposition.
5.
What characteristics are apparent on Day 7? What stage of decomposition does this
represent? (1 point)
On oder is produced and bloating occurs. Maggots are visible on their faces and animals
begin to be active. Fatty acids kill the grass around the body, and Beatles begin to be
seen. This represents the early decomposition faze.
6.
What characteristics are apparent on Day 14? What stage of decomposition does this
represent? (1 point)
Less flies and more beetles are present on day 14, insects are eating soft tissue, an order
is formed, bodily fluids are leaking into the environment, and the larvae are in the third
instar phase. This illustrates the initial stages of decomposition.
7.
What characteristics are apparent on Day 30? What stage of decomposition does this
represent? (1 point)
On day 30, the corpse is drying out, the flies are completely gone, there are some beetles,
animals are roaming the body, the body fluids have been depleted, and the skin has turned
dry and leathery. This is the advanced stage of decomposition.
8.
What characteristics are apparent on Day 365? What stage of decomposition does this
represent? (1 point)
On day 365, the corpse has completely decomposed, plants have started to grow around it, and
the bones have been gnawed on and scratched by scavengers. This represents the extreme
decomposition faze.
9.
Click “Start Over,” then select the area of the map for Alberta, Canada, and evaluate the
rate of decay within this climate. Did the stages of decomposition occur according to the
same timetable? If not, why do you think it’s different? (2 points)
No, the steps of decomposition did not take place in Alberta, Canada, in the same order. The
climate in Alberta, Canada, is unique since it is generally cooler and less humid. The rate of
decay is slower in a colder climate, thus you must utilize a timetable designed for that
environment. Climate also has an impact on several components of the decomposition process,
which must be taken into consideration. Adipocere, for instance, contributes to decomposition
in colder, less humid regions like Alberta, Canada, but it does not form in warmer, more humid
climates like Knoxville, Tennessee. Because the characteristics of the various stages of
decomposition vary, there are several timetables for various sorts of environments.
