Homework 1
Chapter 1, Media Activity 1.2:
Can gargling with salt water and vinegar eliminate the COVID-19 coronavirus from the throat of
an infected person? What evidence supports your answer?
Gargling with salt water and vinegar does not eliminate the COVID-19 coronavirus from
the throat of an infected person. After researching the viral post “Will Gargling with Salt Water
or Vinegar “Eliminate” the COVID-19 Coronavirus” by David Mikkelson, on Snopes.com, and
other sources such as the World Health Organization I have found that there is no evidence to
support this claim.
Both sources suggest that there is no evidence to support that this practice can eliminate
or prevent the COVID-19 infection, but they acknowledge that there is limited evidence that show
that this practice may help in other ways, such as helping to speed up people’s recovery from a
cold or working as a remedy for a sore throat.
The assumption that Gargling with salt water and vinegar can eliminate the COVID-19
coronavirus from the throat of an infected person, also comes from the assumption that the virus
incubates in the throat for four days, which is when an individual will experience coughing and
throat pains, and if the individual starts to gargle salt water and vinegar in that time it will
eliminate the virus. The problem with this is that there is no evidence that supports that the virus
remains in the throat for four days, or that taking this action at this time would eliminate the
virus, the most it would do is relieve some of the cold symptoms that may come with it.

Describe 4 differences and 4 similarities between viral lytic and lysogenic phases. * For each difference clearly state the reason why lytic is different from lysogenic using technical biological terms.* For each similarity you can just state what is the reason(s) the 2 phases are similar.

Answer the following
1.Are viruses living or non-living organisms?
2. What is the difference between HIV and AIDS?
3. HIV is classified as a retrovirus. What are retroviruses?
4. In your own words, provide a short summary of the HIV replication cycle.
5. Why is reverse transcriptase an important enzyme in the replication cycle of HIV?
6. In the chapter about enzymes, we have discussed how drugs are basically inhibitors. There are currently a multitude of Antiretroviral therapy (ART or ARV) options available to people living with HIV (PLHIV) so that the viral replication is suppressed and does not progress to AIDS. What do you think these drugs target? Discuss briefly.
7. SARS-CoV-2, the virus that causes CoVid-19, belongs to the Coronaviridae family. Viruses under this family have a genome made of single-stranded positive-sense RNA. Is this similar to the viral genome of HIV? If so, do you think that – in theory – they would have similar replication cycles?

Viruses are non-living and can only replicate when they are able to
insert their genetic material into the host. Viruses consist of DNA or
RNA surrounded by a protein coat called a capsid.
The common cold, influenza, chicken pox, warts, AIDS, measles, and
covid-19 are all caused by viruses. However, not all viruses cause
disease.

answer doesn't have to be long i just need an explanation, thank you!
The whole world right now is concerned (or they should be) about the appearance of new variants of SARS-CoV-2. Among other things, these variant viruses have mutations that change the amino acid sequence of the spike protein on the virus surface. While this is concerning, I would like to propose that there is a limit to how far these mutations can change the spike protein. Why can't there be an endless number of new mutations of this viral protein? How would these amino acid changes affect how the virus works?
