Incident Command System Exercise
Q4: Effectiveness of the response: What did your team/class do well/poorly? Consider: appropriate support, staging areas, notification of hospitals, police agencies utilized and how public warning, evidence protected, media notification and location, evacuation plan, local, state,
or Governor’s Declaration of Emergency utilized.
A4: My team (CCSD) did a good job managing the traffic issues associated with the Buckeye Pipeline explosion. Initially we determined the appropriate distance from the explosion to halt traffic. I think that the MPD could have done a better job in communicating the perimeter for road closures to the Sheriff’s Department, alerting hospitals, and getting the message out for public safety. I believe the Command Center was positioned in an appropriate place in order to deal with evacuees, the Red Cross, and other agencies involved with the explosion. In addition the CCSD had to make some changes to the road closures due to the call of shots fired and officer wounded on F. Dr. South Lot 58 in the Twin Valley Trailer park. I consider the evacuation plan and road closures of the CCSD to be as efficient as possible with the utmost amount of care placed on protecting the citizens in the community.
Q5: Ability to work as a team.
A5: I found it very easy to work with Jasmine Raleigh and Tim Stuck. They both brought great ideas to the group and helped me to consider circumstances and conditions that I would not have thought of on my own. As far as the rest of the class, I felt as if we could have communicated better. I am still unclear of how public warning was handled, if the Red Cross was involved, and
how the media may have been dealt with.
Q6:
Describe your contribution to your group: (Be sure to be specific by giving examples or describing what you did.)
A6: I contributed to my group by getting in touch with the Fire Chief of the MFD. I asked questions pertaining to the appropriate distance for road closures in our hypothetical situation. I also asked questions on the guidelines for dealing with a chemical explosion and spill. The Fire Chief informed me that they would use foam in an attempt to absorb the material and where exactly they would get the foam from. I also assisted Jasmine and Tim in the decision on what roads to close and detour routes.

Kathryn was employed at a large retail store at the mall. Her responsibilities were to straighten
and stock merchandise, handle telephone orders, and sell to customers in her department of
the store. It was also her responsibility to be alert to shoplifters and vandals who might steal
or damage merchandise. Sometimes the store was very crowded and customers had to wait to
be checked out at her register.
Sometimes Kathryn's friends would come into the store to shop or visit. She enjoyed their
company and was always glad to see them. Once, however, she was very busy with customers
when friends came to visit, and she saw one of the friends steal an item of clothing from her
department. She looked the other way and pretended not to see the theft.
After visiting with her, the friends left the store to go to a movie. The person who stole the
merchandise took it and left with the group. Kathryn never mentioned to anyone what she had
seen.

Because the work experience gained here was useful, much of the budget analysis work done in the department was performed by a group of management trainees. The trainees tended to be recent college graduates who were ambitious; they expected the budget work experience to be the pathway into the prestigious auditing department.
Wambui managed under the assumption that by maintaining an open-door policy her employees would bring any problems to her attention. As a result, she remained in her office and seldom met with the trainees. Instead she would peruse the budget reports they submitted and return them to her secretary without comment.
The reports often bore numerous errors which the trainees would be expected to make but which Wambui’s quick persual of the documents did not catch. The department heads throughout Faida Bank who received the erroneous reports would complain directly to the trainee who…
