GCE Assignment 1

BUSN119

ANKITA LUITEL
To address the questions in your assignment, we can draw on the concepts
discussed in your textbook, particularly from Chapter 4 on Ethics and Social
Responsibility, as well as the additional materials and concepts you were instructed
to review, like "The Story of Stuff" and the Changemaker Quiz.
1. Management, Stakeholders & Ethics
a. The "Story of Stuff" draws attention to several moral conundrums pertaining to the heavy use
of resources, the effects of production and consumption on the environment and people, and the
viability of present-day economic methods. These conundrums force businesses to reevaluate
their obligations to a range of stakeholders, such as owners, workers, suppliers, communities,
and the environment. Beyond financial gain and legal compliance, ethical considerations also
consider the wellbeing of these stakeholders and the environment.
b. The "Story of Stuff" is a call to action for businesses to adopt more equitable and sustainable
practices in relation to GCE #4, which examines how the world's resources are used to ensure
sustainability and equitable distribution. Carroll's Pyramid of CSR encourages businesses to take
on legal, ethical, and philanthropic duties in addition to their economic ones. Businesses can
show their commitment to social responsibility by implementing policies that guarantee resource
sustainability, reduce their negative effects on the environment, and improve local and global
communities’ quality of life.
2. Ethics in Practice
For the "Ethics in Practice" , All birds provides an exemplary case of a company
committed to GCE #6 through its extensive social responsibility initiatives. All birds'
approach to sustainability and social responsibility is multifaceted, focusing on
reducing carbon emissions, sustainable supply chain practices, and diversity and
inclusion within its workforce.

THE PRISON SERVICE
The prison service provides an excellent example of the complexity of stakeholder requirements, to some extent reflecting the mixed task it faces.
Society requires the service to carry out potentially conflicting activities:
● to ensure that ‘dangerous criminals’ are locked up for the safety of society
● to provide a regime that will punish wrongdoers as a means of payment for their crimes
● to support inmates, providing counselling and training to rehabilitate and reform them, to reduce the likelihood of re- offending.
The principal stakeholders and their requirements are as follows:
● Government ministers with responsibility for the prison service will be concerned to fulfil manifesto promises while meeting spending targets. At the same time they will be concerned about stories of prisoner escapes or drug abuse that may be damaging to their personal reputation, possibly forcing their resignation.
● Prison governors will seek to provide an appropriate…

Your employees have been incurring a lot of overtime lately for staffing special events. You cannot afford to pay time-and-a-half for overtime, so you make a deal with your employees: if they work fifty hours this week, you will let them work thirty hours the next week and take a long weekend. They are happy and you are happy.
Discussion Questions
1. Is this legally acceptable? Why? What can happen if you get caught doing this? Which agency monitors businesses and what might happen if you are reported? What legislation are you violating?
2. What is the best way to handle this staffing challenge?

Case 1: Control Environment and Control Activities: The Importance of Hiring Trustworthy Employees
Joe and Mary Gray started their multimillion-dollar home electronics and car audio store chain in Texas in the late 1970s. By mid-1983, their company had grown to 10 stores in 3 states with 500 employees and gross sales of $30 million. The decline of the oil industry in the mid 1980s led to the company losing almost half of their employees. Additionally, as people moved to more economically viable states, employee turnover continued to increase. During this time, the Grays needed to fill a recently vacated Controller position in their main office. The position was crucial and required a person who was highly motivated and knowledgeable of operations. After interviewing several candidates, they decided to give Jeff Smith…

You'll need to write a response to the case that covers the following areas. [Please note, that there are questions printed on the case. You may disregard those.] Your response should be in the form of a well constructed argument. Make sure that you are making your point clearly and concisely. The response should follow the following format:
1. Start with a statement of the problem facing PedalSpark. (You might find it helpful to think of it this way: Assume that PedalSpark hired you as a consultant to help them make a decision. What decision are they trying to make?)
2. Next you'll want to outline the alternative courses of action that PedalSpark could take. You need to have at least two alternative courses of action that PedalSpark could take and you'll want to discuss the advantages and disadvantages of each course of action. Read the following scenario and address the steps that follow.
As the founder of a software start-up, you are developing a new application. This application will allow venues, bands, and
musical acts to post their events to the application. Users can then search by dates, locations, and music genres to find who
is performing, when, and where. While the general outcome is defined, how to get there is not. It is unclear what the end-
users will really want and how they will want it in the app. It is also unclear if this is going to be an app that is downloadable
from the App Store and Google Play or if it will be a progressive web app that is accessible from any of the major web
browsers. It is also unclear what developer skill sets will be needed to write the code and manage the server and application.
Use this scenario to address the following in 525 to 700 words.
1. Assess which development life cycle (predictive or adaptive) you will use.
