DAT 520 Module Four Lab Worksheet
Decomposition Trees in Power BI
Overview
In Module Four, you move from working with bottom-up models to working with top-down models. The goal of this lab is to introduce you to the methodology of decision analysis and teach you how to read decision trees and answer questions about them. Conditional probabilities will be calculated for you! Just point and click. Note:
You can view the entire decision tree by clicking and dragging the tree from left to right as needed. Also, while you are practicing, the layout dashboard may be altered to the point that it is no longer useful. If this happens, simply close it, do not
save it, and reopen it. The dashboard will default back to its original state.
Instructions
Complete the uCertify lab
6.1 Decomposition Trees in Power BI. Then, replace the bracketed text with the relevant information. Please note: This assignment will be submitted and graded in Brightspace. 1.
What does your new decision tree look like? Provide a screenshot.
[
]
2.
What is the average age with these new selections?
[38.61.]
3.
You can select variables from the decision tree by clicking on them. The output of the tree will change based on each selection. Change the inputs so only the following are selected, then take a screenshot of the revised decision tree and provide it below.
·
Weighted percentage of white
·
Female
·
Occupation of prof-specialty
·
With a doctorate degree [
]
4.
As you change the inputs, the numbers change. Why do you think this is?
[ We are eliminating some of the factors that contributed to those numbers. Example: The number for doctorate change when we eliminated “male” as an option.]
5.
Using the skill you’ve learned, create three different decision trees with the data and explain what each one is calculating.

Seneca Hill Winery recently purchased land for the purpose of establishing a new vineyard. Management is considering two varieties of white grapes for the new vineyard: Chardonnay and Riesling. The Chardonnay grapes would be used
to produce a dry Chardonnay wine, and the Riesling grapes would be used to produce a semidry Riesling wine. It takes approximately four years from the time of planting before new grapes can be harvested. This length of time creates a
great deal of uncertainty concerning future demand and makes the decision concerning the type of grapes to plant difficult. Three possibilities are being considered: Chardonnay grapes only; Riesling grapes only; and both Chardonnay and
Riesling grapes. Seneca management decided that for planning purposes it would be adequate to consider only two demand possibilities for each type of wine: strong or weak. With two possibilities for each type of wine it was necessary to
assess four probabilities. With the help of some forecasts in…

Decision Trees

Decision trees provide a graphical representation of decision alternatives, uncertain events, and their
respective outcomes. They can be particularly useful for sequential decision problems.
Learning material: Please watch this video
Scenario:
A farmer is deciding whether to plant Corn or Wheat in his field for the upcoming season. The yield and
hence revenue from each crop will depend on the weather, which can either be Sunny or Rainy.
Data:
Revenues in USD (based on weather conditions):
Crop
Corn
Wheat
Weather Probabilities:
•
Sunny: 0.6
•
Rainy: 0.4
Assignment Steps:
1. Draw the Decision Tree:
Sunny
Rainy

4,000
6,000
5,000
•
Start with a decision node for the crop choice.
•
Branch out to the two potential weather outcomes for each crop choice.
2. Calculate Expected Monetary Values (EMVs):
For each crop, use the provided probabilities and revenues to calculate the EMV. EMV =…
