Bhattacharyya, S. (2024) FedEx CEO eyes Red Sea crisis, rising ocean rates.
This article discusses FedEx’s role in a current global issue. As a major player throughout
the supply chain, FedEx must closely monitor the situation in the Red Sea with the ongoing threat of rebel attacks against cargo and transport ships. These threats have seen some corporations shift some operations to utilizing air transportation to avoid the possibility of an attack or a seizure of the vessel and cargo while on the open water. With the price of air freight being higher than the typical cargo ship delivery, companies will be forced to raise their prices in order to maintain profitability while keeping their cargo, and crews safe from harm. situation.

FedEx’s organizational structure is similar to other logistics and supply chain companies. First there is the main FedEx Corporation which encompasses the rest of the FedEx divisions. Each division of FedEx is its own operating company. The other divisions are FedEx Express, FedEx Services, FedEx ground, FedEx Freight, FedEx Office, FedEx Logistics, and FedEx Dataworks. All these divisions work together to service over 220 countries and territories that provide supply chain expertise to creating cutting-edge tech solutions.

FedEx Cares is the company’s global community engagement program that connects people and possibilities. FedEx’s goals are to help make the world a better place through in-kind shipping, volunteering, and charitable giving. One such community program that FedEx sponsored this year was the Purple Totes Grant Contest. More than 3,200 FedEx employees collected and donated over 4,700 totes worldwide. All of the nonprofits that were supported received a $5,000 grant from FedEx!
Kulisch, E. (2023) Freight Waves. FedEx to shut down 29 more aircraft as demand shrinks.
This current article from Freight Waves discussed how FedEx removed twenty-nine aircraft from its fleet this year through permanent retirement and temporary storage. This strategy will help streamline FedEx’s network as global trade slows. Through consolidation, FedEx is able to improve efficiency and reduce immediate operating costs.
By no means does this decision mean that FedEx is struggling or going out of business. FedEx is just reacting to the current market trends and will continue to add new aircraft to
their fleet in the future as demand increases or older assets need to be replaced. Adjusting
assets to match demand is part of any healthy business strategy.
Galea-Pace, S. (2020) Inside FedEx Logistics. Inside Supply Chain
This article also discusses the role of FedEx throughout the supply chain as a solution-
based company that enables businesses to access 99% of the world’s GDP and operates in
over 220 countries and territories globally. One such aspect is international freight forwarding. FedEx provides three choices for ocean freight forwarding which are 3

Q3. Please read the following case and answer the questions given at the end.
Starting as a single hotel in a Paris suburb in 1995, the Hotel Paris is now a chain of nine hotels, with two in France, one each in London and Rome, and others in New York, Miami, Washington, Chicago, and Los Angeles. As a corporate strategy, the Hotel Paris’s management and owners want to continue to expand geographically. They believe doing so will let them capitalize on their reputation for good service, by providing multicity alternatives for their satisfied guests. The problem is, their reputation for good service has been deteriorating. If they cannot improve service, it would be unwise for them to expand, since their guests might prefer other hotels after trying the Hotel Paris.
Several things are complicating their problem. Tourists increasingly stay at short-term rental apartments (often through sites such as airbnb .com) for a fraction of what fine hotels cost. In 2018 Airbnb agreed to more…

Based on a scenario of lifting severe travel restrictions after three months, IATA reported thatpassenger demand in 2020 in the Asia Pacific region to be reduced by 35%–45%, with a combinedrevenue loss of $88 billion. Fighting for survival, airlines “would need financial relief urgently tosustain their businesses through this volatile situation,” said Conrad Clifford, IATA’s RegionalVice President, Asia-Pacific.Looking back in history, the airline industry has always bounced back from every crisis it hasexperienced. After the 2003 SARS outbreak, which caused Asia Pacific airlines to lose $6 billion, travel returned to normal within nine months. One glimmer of hope in the midst of the coronavirusdevastation was the oil price war between Saudi Arabia and Russia. In January 2020, crudehovered above $70 a barrel. By March, it fell to $30. This would be a tremendous lift for airlines, because fuel burn was one of their biggest expenses. While the weak players were washed out bythe virus,…
