GROUP ASSIGNMENT Template: Trifolium population dynamics proposal (20 pts) Names : Berenice, Alejandra, Hoshyar, Ditmore, Alydia Section Number: 20 Instructor Name: Shiva Abbasi RESEARCH QUESTION How does food type affect population growth in trifoliums confusum? BACKGROUND INFORMATION Flour beetles are insects frequently found in stored products like cereals, flour, dry animal food, and others. Flour beetles would often leave the food to look for mates. Adult females lay about 300 400 eggs and hatch in 5 to 12 days. Their eggs are composed of clear shells that is coated in a sticky substance which is then covered in flour (Mason 2018.) The life cycle varies from 3 to 7 weeks and the adults live up to 3 years. The damage they cause can produce foul order and make the flour look gray when there are more of them that are in the flour. (U.S Army, 2005.) The Flour Beetles feed off of stored food and are the most common pest in processed flour (Merchant et al., 2018.) Flour beetles are free-living but are usually brought into food warehouses, retail stores, and homes through the movement of grocery products and/or dry animal food. A good way to control these pests would be to get rid of infested products, which tend to be the oldest things. Keeping things clean after spilling grains or pet food is a good way to avoid these pests. Use of pesticide treatments to eliminate flour beetle infestations may be necessary if all other control measures and searches for the flour beetles prove unsuccessful. https://www.maine.gov/dacf/php/gotpests/bugs/factsheets/flour-beetles-army.pdf https://extensionentomology.tamu.edu/insect_scientific_name/tribolium-castaneum/ HYPOTHESIS During the 10 weeks of observing the Tribolium Confusum Beetles, the wheat flour beetles will stay consistent whereas the beetles in the rice flours population will fluctuate. PREDICTIONS As a group we predict a greater number of dead beetles in the rice flour. We expect to see a lesser number of beetles in the rice flour than in the wheat flour if our hypothesis is not supported . VARIABLES
Experimental Group: Rice vials (3&4) Control Group: Wheat vials (1&2) Dependent: Number of Beetles in Vials Independent: Rice and Wheat flour Constant variables: Ambient Temperature (30 degrees Celsius) EXPERIMENTAL PROCEDURE To begin our experiment, we separated four vials of either wheat flour or rice flour. Two vials held 8 grams of wheat flour and the other 2 held 8 grams of rice flour. After we filled each vial with 10 adult Tribolium Confusum beetles. Throughout the semester we will observe each vial and remove the dead beetles. At the end of the semester, the number of dead beetles taken from each vial will determine the best flour source for T. Confusum beetles. LITERATURE CITED Include all sources cited in the background information section and the manual, if used in the experimental procedure. These MUST BE IN CSE FORMAT.
