Ernest Mungong Unit V Journal Oil field companies are often known for keeping a well-serviced fleet of trucks for their staff employees, including often replacing these trucks for aesthetic purposes in order to maintain a strong marketing position within their competitive marketplace of client oil and gas producers. One of the most notable deteriorations of oil field service vehicles with relatively little age and mileage is the exterior paint coating of the vehicle. What air pollutants might be responsible for the deterioration of the vehicle paint color, luster, and integrity? Carefully explain your answer from a chemical perspective. The appearance and durability of vehicle-painted surfaces may be affected by air pollutants such as PM, HS, SOx, NH, and O3, commonly found in a refinery. These air pollutants can cause significant deteriorations of the exterior paint coating of the oil field services vehicles, such as paint color, luster and integrity, within a short period, even with the relatively little age and mileage of the vehicles. Air pollutants can also affect the paint adhesion and strength and increase the drying time. Sulphur dioxide, an air pollutant, can increase the drying time of some paint by reacting with drying oils and competing with auto- oxidative curing reactions responsible for cross-linking the binder. The accumulation of aerosol particles can cause chemical deterioration of freshly applied paints, thereby affecting the newly painted vehicle and making it look dirty or greasy on the surface. These particles may also serve as wicks by allowing chemically reactive substances to migrate into underlying surfaces, resulting in corrosion and subsequent paint peeling due to poor attachment of the paint on the surface. Exterior paints pigmented with white lead (Pb) may also deteriorate when the Pb reacts with low atmospheric levels of H2S, which may blacken the paint surface by forming lead sulfide (PbS). Environmental damage to vehicle paint and coating has been a long problem caused by air pollution as a result of elevated levels of sulphate implicating acid rain, which is formed when (pollutants) coal and other fossil fuels are burned and react with water vapor and oxidants in the atmosphere and are chemically transformed into sulfuric and nitric acids. The acidic compounds then may fall to earth as rain, snow, or fog or may join dry particles and fall as dry deposition, which can scar vehicle coatings. In the presence of these air pollutants, the acidity of the liquid adjacent to the metal or vehicle surfaces increases, and its electrical
conductivity also increases; thereby, the rate of corrosion or deterioration increases. These suspended particles absorb moisture and act as solid electrolytes if chemically active, causing advanced corrosion. Evaporation can be a key element in causing damage to vehicle exterior caused by the acidic moisture on freshly painted vehicles. The evaporation rate will be higher when the environment's relative humidity is high. The moisture acts as a solvent for oxygen, carbon dioxide, and Sulphur dioxide in the air to produce the electrolyte required for setting up a corrosion cell or deterioration. Therefore, frequent washing and hand drying of the vehicle and using protective coatings to protect the original finish may solve the problem of these air pollutants.
