2 Speaking Notes Draft My topic’s scientific background: Dead zones in the ocean are regions where the concentration of dissolved oxygen in the water is so low that it becomes insufficient to support marine life. These areas have been the subject of extensive research in biology, ecology, and physical geography due to their severe impact on the marine ecosystem. The depletion of oxygen in these zones is primarily caused by human activities such as pollution and nutrient runoff, which leads to excessive algae growth and ultimately consumes all the available oxygen in the water. This phenomenon has grave consequences for the survival of fish, shellfish, and other marine animals and can cause profound changes in the food chain and oceanic biodiversity. Impact on my audience: The impact of ocean dead zones on marine life and ecosystems is a matter of great concern for scientists. An in-depth study of these zones is necessary to comprehend their causes, effects, and potential solutions. Scientists are deeply invested in understanding dead zones as they pose a significant environmental challenge. They are actively researching the impact of various climate change variables, including changes in temperature, ocean acidification, storm patterns, wind, rain, and rising sea levels, on the formation of dead zones. My empirical evidence: What are 'dead zones,' and why are they getting worse? Why this issue is important to me personally: The impact of dead zones in the ocean on marine life cannot be underestimated. It affects not only the creatures living in the sea but also us humans who rely on it for food and as a source of livelihood. It's important to understand that dead zones alter the food chain and can have long-
