Chemistry 114 Fall 2021, Lehman College, CUNY - Wallace 1 Essentials of General Chemistry : Fall 2021… Section 01: Tuesday/Thursday 1:40pm – 2:55pm https://app.tophat.com/e/216648 Instructor: Goal of the course: This is a one-semester general chemistry course to prepare you for a health science career. Essentials of General Chemistry is a demanding course. The primary objective is to introduce you to the fundamental principles that underlay the chemical sciences. Chemistry is all around us, in the food that we eat, in the clothes we wear, in the technology you are using to read this right now, and in you, yourself! In this course we will introduce the basic principles of chemistry starting from individual atoms and molecules through chemical reactions and applications. We aim to connect observable features in our everyday lives to the chemical foundations behind them. To achieve success in this course, you will need to organize large quantities of information in coherent ways, so that you are able to recall and apply your knowledge. Organization of your time will be essential! Essentials of General Chemistry in the Fall 2021 semester will be delivered online. The course will be taught online with the primary delivery of course content through a series of custom-made course videos supported by a variety of online assignments and guided problem-solving sessions. The course is synchronous, meaning you MUST login at a specific time (Tuesdays & Thursdays 1:40-2:55pm), so it offers you no different flexibility to the in-person course. This class requires an equal time commitment as the traditional face-to-face course. Please read through this document thoroughly, familiarize yourself with the course websites, and always feel free to write to me with your questions or concerns! You should plan to spend at least 10-15 hours per week watching videos, doing your online homework, engaging with your classmates through the discussion boards and learning the materials. It is your responsibility to prepare yourself for every unit before you come to class to engage in the live graded guided problem-solving sessions. You must keep up with the material – it is unlikely that you will be able to catch up if you should happen to fall behind. Course Description CHE 114: Essentials of General Chemistry Lecture: 3 credits. Essentials of chemistry and their applications to inorganic chemistry. PREREQ: MAT 104 or satisfaction of requirements for placement into precalculus (MAT 172). Goal of the Course: This is a one-semester general chemistry course to prepare you for a health science-based career. Essentials of General Chemistry is a demanding course and while its primary objective is to introduce you to the fundamental principles that underlie the chemical sciences, to achieve success in this course you will need to organize large quantities of information in coherent ways so that you are able to recall and apply your knowledge. Organization of your time will be essential! How This Course Works: This section of Essentials of General Chemistry is run as a fully online course. In this model you will watch videos and complete online assignments. There will be opportunities for live help sessions and regular communication through email and announcements. Technology Requirements: You will need access to a computer with a reliable internet connection. A webcam and microphone will help you engage fully in course discussions and activities. You must Dr. Sonjae Wallace Email:sonjae.wallace@lehman.cuny.edu Office Hours: TBA
Chemistry 114 Fall 2021, Lehman College, CUNY - Wallace 2 regularly check the email account linked to your Blackboard login for course updates and communication. If you do not check your email regularly it is possible that you will miss important information - which is likely to have a negative impact your grade. You will also need a scientific calculator to help with assignments and which you are required to have for the exams. Instructional Technology: As part of this course, we will be using three online platforms: ZOOM, Blackboard and Top Hat. You should log on to all three as soon as you can so that you can familiarize yourself with the look and feel of the web interfaces. Access fees: Top Hat is a commercial platform that we have used to build this course and host our custom CHE114 course content. It does have an access fee of $76 for our course, which we ask you to purchase instead of a traditional textbook. ZOOM: In order to gain access to the ZOOM classroom, you must sign in with a ZOOM account that is associated with your Lehman College email. ZOOM is free. There are no exceptions to this policy! Blackboard: You should automatically gain access to the Blackboard site if you have registered for the course. All course announcements, course documents (syllabus, pacing guide, learning goals, grading scheme, video table of contents), and discussion boards will be hosted on Blackboard. We will use Blackboard for all of our examinations. For help with Blackboard please see: http://www.lehman.edu/itr/about-it-center.php & http://www.lehman.edu/itr/blackboard.php Top Hat: You will receive an email from Top Hat inviting you to join this course which will require you to create an account within Top Hat. This email will be sent to the email address associated with your Blackboard account. If you cannot find your invitation email, please contact me. You will need to create your Top Hat account with the email address used in Blackboard and entering your EMPLID as your student ID. The Top Hat site we will use has been designed specifically for our course. You should think of it is a virtual interactive textbook. This is where you will read and watch all the material for the different topics we will be covering as well as where you will complete most of the coursework: https://app.tophat.com/e/216648 Course Components The assignments described below are all included in a typical course unit. We recommend you complete them in the order they are described below. Learning Goal Analysis (LGA): Before you begin a new unit, you will be required to complete a Learning Goal Analysis on Top Hat. This analysis asks you to read each learning goal for that topic and assess how comfortable you feel with the content to be presented. There is no wrong answer to an LGA question. The goal is to help you begin accurately self-assessing your own content understanding and focus your attention on the learning goals to drive your learning. These learning goals serve as both an outline for the course and a tool to help you prepare for your exams. Use the LGA to study for your exams. Every single exam question is based on at least one learning goal (although some will contain multiple learning goals). There is also an LGA document in the Course Documents folder on Blackboard that can be used to review the learning goals. Video Assignments: This course is built around a custom video backbone that provides the initial exposure to the course content. Each video uses a combination of narration and visuals to explain part of a topic and ends with a Let’s Practice problem demonstrating how the content is meant to be applied. You should take notes during the videos and work through the problems as you watch. You must watch the videos for a given unit on Top Hat and then answer a few (usually 3) questions related to each video.
Chemistry 114 Fall 2021, Lehman College, CUNY - Wallace 3 Guided Problem Solving (GPS): Every unit will have a corresponding GPS assignment. These are a series of questions presented during our live instructor led biweekly sessions. These are embedded questions requiring students to solve and interact with the synchronous lecture. These questions are meant to highlight important concepts for each unit. Homework (HW) : Once you have covered all of the content for a given unit there is a cumulative Homework assignment on Top Hat that brings together all the important concepts. These assignments are usually around 20 questions and summarize the main problem-solving components of each unit. Optional Textbook: For the purpose of this class you will not be required to buy a textbook. You can however, use ANY General Chemistry textbook. We will not be working through a textbook in a chapter- by-chapter fashion; rather we will cover 17 chemistry topics as presented in the videos and you can elect to use any textbook as a reference. If you feel the need to buy/rent a print textbook, Chemistry, 8 th Ed., Zumdahl and Zumdahl is a wonderful choice. Or you may prefer the Chemistry OpenStax free book: https://openstax.org/books/chemistry-atoms-first-2e/pages/1-introduction . There are other free textbooks that your professor has made available to you within blackboard. Detailed Course Outline: Within Blackboard, the course is broken down into 17 weekly modules. Each module details the units covered that week and the required assignments. Please see the Course Pacing Guide (on the next page and on Blackboard) for a detailed course schedule that includes exam dates. In addition, we have created a Video Table of Contents (also on Blackboard) with a video breakdown of each unit including the required viewing time to help you organize your time effectively. Assessment/Grading I do not award grades in this class; you earn the grades. It is my job to help you to earn the highest grade of which you are capable! Grading Policy: To earn full credit (100%) in this course you must accumulate 825 points. Of this, 325 points come from your unit grades and 500 points come from your exam grades. Therefore, you will earn 500 points doing your exams on Blackboard, and 325 points for all other homework and class activities via TopHat. Please see the Grading Scheme (below & on Blackboard) for details. Every component of this course earns you points towards your final grade, but to earn your points you must complete each component by its due date (see Pacing Guide ).
