Case Scenario:
Joan is a Health Care Assistant working in a complex care facility. She enjoys her
work a lot - especially, as she says, “working with my sweet little old ladies.” Joan is well-
organized and makes every effort to assure that the clients in her care are safe, clean, and
comfortable. Today, when she completed bathing Mrs. DeVito, Joan dressed her in a flowery
dress and placed a bright red bow in Mrs. DeVito’s white hair, saying, “There you go, dearie. You
look so cute.” Mrs. DeVito is deaf so she didn’t hear Joan’s comment. She just smiled and
nodded.
Review the above situation and answer the following questions:
What is there about this situation that reflects person-centred care and what does not?
Person-centred care means treating the person (resident/client/patient) with respect and
dignity. In this scenario, Joan makes every effort to make her clients look clean, comfortable,
and safe. The way Joan dressed Mrs. DeVito after shower shows the person-centered care
approach. The only situation which does not reflect person-centered care is the method of
communication. Joan should have used a different method of communication when she said
Mrs. DeVito looks cute. Since Mrs. DeVito is deaf, Joan should have used some hand gestures or
a written note to tell her that she looks cute.
Could the situation have been handled differently? If so, how?
Yes, the choice of method of communication could have been better. Joan should have used
hand gestures or written note to tell Mrs. DeVito that she looks cute.
What is there about this situation that reflects caring?
What reflects caring in this situation is the way Joan takes pride in her work. She is well
organised and ensures the well being, cleanliness, and safety of her clients.
What does not?
Even though Joan does her best for her clients, but I think she could have used a different
means of communication considering that Mrs. DeVito is deaf.

You ask the individual if they are taking any non-prescription drugs. They tell you they recently started taking a coenzyme Q10 supplement based on a recommendation from a friend. The structure of coenzyme Q10 is shown below. Looking at the structure of the molecule, which one of the 4 major classes of macromolecules (carbohydrate, lipid, proteins or nucleotides) does it most closely resemble? Be sure to include specific chemical characteristics that support this decision.

2. Zinc (Zn) granules react slowly with dilute hydrochloric acid (HCI), but much faster if the acid is concentrated.
Zn(s)
2HCI(aq)ZnCl2(aq) + H2(g)
Zinc + Hydrochloric Acid Zinc Chloride + Hydrogen
What causes the reaction to proceed faster with concentrated acid?
The concentrated hydrochloric acid causes more hydrogen gas to be produced.
The pressure of hydrogen gas molecules increases as concentration increases.
The concentrated hydrochloric acid molecules move faster than in dilute acid.
There are more collisions between the zinc and concentrated hydrochloric acid.

Like anatomy and physiology, chemistry may be a somewhat scary subject for you. Think of it this way: Chemistry is simply the study of matter, its composition, structure, properties, and the changes matter may undergo. Your goal in training as a cosmetologist is not to become a scientist, but to develop a comfort level with the basics and an ability to discuss chemistry in relation to your profession. This will increase your credibility significantly with your clients, especially during the consultation process.
In the space provided, write how chemistry affects your everyday life.

On the occasion of World Health Day, Dr. Satpal organized a ‘health camp’ for the poor farmers living in a nearby village. After check-up, he was shocked to see that most of the farmers suffered from cancer due to regular exposure to pesticides and many were diabetic. They distributed free medicines to them. Dr. Satpal immediately reported the matter to the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC). On the suggestions of NHRC, the government decided to provide medical care, financial assistance, setting up of superspeciality hospitals for treatment and prevention of the deadly disease in the affected villages all over India.
