Experiment #10: Molecular Models and Covalent Bonding 11/08/2023 Lab Group members: Jasmin Valdes, Elizabeth Benoit
Purpose: To use a virtual platform to build and analyze molecules to help understand more fully the theoretical concepts of covalent bonding and molecular structure. Chemicals: Materials: - None - WebMo Demo site - Paper - Pencil Pre-laboratory Assignment For the molecule AX3, in which all the atoms are in Periodic Group VIIA or 17 (the Halogens): 1. Draw the correct Lewis Structure. If others are possible but less likely, draw them too and explain why the correct one is the selection. This molecule is made up of 3 equally spaced sp 2 hybrid orbitals arranged at 120 o angles. The shape of the orbitals is trigonal planar. Since there is an atom at the end of each orbital, the shape of the molecule is also trigonal planar. 2. What are the electron pairs and molecular geometries? a. Electron pair geometry: Trigonal Planar b. Molecular geometry: Trigonal Planar 3. What is the predicted (ideal) bond angle about the central atom? 120 0 4. Is the molecule polar or nonpolar? Non-Polar 5. What is the orbital hybridization on the central atom? sp 2
