What is the most commonly accepted explanation of why most people are slower on incongruent trials than on congruent trials in the Stroop task? A common explanation for the Stroop effect is that participants (especially college undergraduates) have automatized the process of reading. Therefore, the color names of the words are always processed very quickly, regardless of the color of the ink. 2. Imagine that in this demonstration you were asked to read the color words and to ignore the ink color in which the words are written. Using the explanation of the Stroop Effect given in the text, do you think your reaction times on the incongruent trials would be faster, slower, or similar to the congruent trials? Identifying colors is not a task that participants have to report on very often and, because it is not automatized, it is slower. The fast and automatic processing of the color name of the word interferes with the reporting of the ink color. Advanced Question (4 points per question) 3. If you look at the trial-by-trial data, you will probably note that the incongruent trials show more variability than the congruent trials. That is, the incongruent tend to have some very long and some moderately long trials, while the congruent trials tend to not have so many long trials.
