Lab 3 Proposal Missing Labels Intro: We will be identifying multiple sets of unknown chemicals by performing various tests. These tests include testing for pH, and mixing the chemicals with each other and observing temperature, color, and odor changes, as well as any formation of precipitate. Materials: - Room 1 set: AgNO3(aq), Mn(NO3)2(aq), Ba(NO3)2(aq), HCl(aq), NaOH(aq) - Room 2 set: Zn(NO3)2(aq), Al(NO3)3(aq), AgNO3(aq), NaOH(aq), NH3(aq) - Room 3 set: AgNO3(aq), Ba(NO3)2(aq), HCl(aq), H2SO4(aq), NaOH(aq) - Room 4 set: AgNO3(aq), Pb(NO3)2(aq), HCl(aq), NH3(aq), H2O(aq) - Litmus Paper - Droppers - Thermometer - Spot-plate Procedure: 1. Put on all required safety gear 2. Gather all materials, including the unknown sets of chemicals, that will be necessary for testing 3. Label a set of chemicals from one room with numbers 1-5 4. Repeat this step for each room set of chemicals in order to keep track while performing the tests 5. Grab the set of unknown chemicals from one room
6. Remember that litmus paper may be used to test the pH of any of the chemicals in order to aid the process of identification and prediction of the reaction 7. Grab a dropper and fill it with one of the unknown chemicals 8. Drop the contents onto the spot plate 9. Grab another dropper and fill it with a different chemical from the set 10. Slowly, drop by drop, release its contents until a reaction takes place 11. Observe any changes or reactions 12. Record observations and data 13. Properly dispose of chemicals in the spot plate and any other contaminated materials 14. Repeat steps 7-13 until each of the chemicals of that room set have been tested with one another 15. Repeat steps 7-13 for each room set of chemicals 16. Use data and observations to conclude the identity of the chemicals Data: Room 1 Unknowns A B C D E
