You will be given verbal instructions, plans and job specifications for the task by your assessor. You will then be required to consult with other students in your study group/team to develop a basic test plan of rock products, take representative rock samples, then test and analyse the results in the RMIT laboratory. You are required to submit the necessary documents to the agreed quality requirements to be deemed satisfactory for the task. This unit of competency sets out the knowledge and skills required to apply site investigation procedures and geological studies, through an understanding of engineering soils, major rock and mineral types, in accordance with AS 1726. This includes tests that are common to the behaviour of engineering soils, in accordance with AS 1289. In this assessment you will demonstrate your knowledge and skill that requires you to 1. STUDENT 2. You are required to perform tasks in the Task List. 3. You will be observed by an assessor in completing each of the steps as set out in the observation checklist. 4. You are required to wear the correct protective clothing before commencing this assessment task. 5. You will be assessed against the criteria as listed in the observation checklist report writing in Section B of this task. 6. You will strive to work with minimal guidance from the supervisor and/or mentor. 7. This assessment will be carried out during the class time under supervision in RMIT building 57 in Civil Engineering workshop [057.01.001]. 8. You must fill in the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Worksheet and RMIT Risk Assessment Form. TASK LISTS: You are provided with rock samples collected from a construction site from RMIT University/other location as suggested by your teacher. You are required to conduct Point Load testing . The Point load test is an index test by which the rock is classified according to the strength. The test can be used to estimate other characteristics of intact rocks with which it correlates, such as uniaxial compressive and tensile strength. Task 1: You must read and sign the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) Worksheet to understand the OHS/WHS and environment requirements for the rock samples test task. Ensure that you follow the requirements and risk control measures in preparation of the work area. Download the JSA Worksheet from CANVAS. (PC 1.1, 1.2, RS 2) Task 2: Use RMIT Risk Assessment Form to conduct risk assessment for the site. You will identify environmental hazards (i.e. liquid waste, dust, excessive noise), safety and equipment hazards, document the risk control measures and implement in consultation with the assessor. (PC 1.3, 1.5, RS 1) Task 3: Follow OHS/WHS requirements during carrying out plan test and analyse, conduct test and analyse results and document the report (PC 2.1, 3.1, 4.1) Task 4: Refer to the rock sample test work request provided below. Follow the procedures provided to conduct the task in Appendix A: Laboratory Testing Procedures. Consult with your assessor to analyse the tasks and coordinate the work effectively. (PC 1.4) 1. Obtain resources and equipment needed for the task in accordance with Appendix A: Laboratory Testing Procedures (PC 1.6) 2. Set up and calibrate sample testing equipment and record in accordance to Job Safety Analysis (JSA) and Australia Standard (PC 2.2, 2.3, 2.4, 3.4,RS2, RS4, RS5) 3. Ensure to store the equipment according to the Job Safety Analysis (JSA) (PC 3.2) 4. Plan, test and record the rock sample in accordance to Australian Standards [AS 4133.4.1 - 2007 Reconfirmed 2016]/local standard or regulation in Appendix A: Laboratory Testing Procedures (PC 1.6) a. Prepare the rock samples according to AS 4133.4.1. (PC 2.5) b. Carry out/conduct laboratory Point-Load test using the Point Load Testing equipment. (PC 3.3, RS 3, 5, RK 2, 10, 42) c. Use Appendix B: Point-Load Test worksheet to record and analyse the results (PC 3.5, 4.2, RS 6) f. Use report criteria provided in Section B to report the soil test and outcomes (PC 4.2, RS 7) g. STUDENT Appendix A: Laboratory Testing Procedures Reference: AS 4133.4.1 - 2007 Reconfirmed 2016 Method of testing rocks for engineering purposes - Method 4.1: Rock strength tests - Determination of point load strength index PROCEDURES: General: Obtain and set up the point load testing machine according the RMIT University Policy. Perform the necessary calibration of the equipment as suggested by your teacher. Select rock samples containing sufficient material for the required number of test specimens from each domain of the rock mass for which point load strengths are required. Samples in the form of core are preferred for more accurate strength classification. Specimens shall be tested at close to their in situ moisture content. Loading rates shall be applied without shock such that failure is obtained 30 s to 3 min after commencement of loading. Diametral Test: The procedure shall be as follows: Select core specimens with a length/diameter ratio greater than 1.0. Insert each specimen in the loading device and close to the platens to make contact along the core diameter, ensuring that the distance ( L ) from the contact points to the nearest free end is at least 0.5 D , where D is a distance between the contact points (see Figure 1). Increase the load to failure then record the distance ( D ). Record the failure load ( P ) and failure mode for each specimen. Axial Test: The procedure shall be as follows: Select core specimens with a length/diameter ratio of 0.6 to 1.0 (see Figure 1).
