Reflecting on Non-Residential Building Studies: A Semester-Long Journey Introduction This assignment is a reflective exploration of my experiences during the Non-Residential Building subject in this semester. Favourite Learnt Materials Non-Residential Building has offered a wealth of knowledge that has expanded my understanding of the construction industry. Among the various topics covered, I found the study of structural systems to be particularly intriguing. The reason behind my affinity for this topic lies in its critical role in the construction process. It's not just about the physical structures; it's about the science and engineering that goes into ensuring those structures are stable and safe. The materials provided, including textbooks, lectures, and practical demonstrations, contributed significantly to my interest in structural systems. The subject matter was made accessible through clear explanations and engaging demonstrations. Additionally, the hands-on experience, such as site visits and examining real-world projects, allowed me to apply theoretical knowledge in practical settings. This active learning approach has been invaluable in helping me grasp the concepts and apply them effectively. Difficulties and How I Worked Around Them Throughout the semester, I encountered some difficulties, both in terms of understanding the course material and working within a group for the assessment. One of the most challenging aspects for me was grasping some of the more complex technical details related to structural systems. The subject delved into intricate designs, calculations, and engineering principles that were initially overwhelming. To overcome this challenge, I adopted a multifaceted approach. Firstly, I engaged with my professors and peers by seeking clarification on the topics I found difficult. Their guidance and explanations were invaluable in breaking down complex ideas into digestible pieces. Moreover, I actively participated in group discussions and study sessions, which allowed for peer-to-peer learning, simplifying challenging concepts through collective efforts. Regarding group work, coordinating schedules and aligning individual contributions posed another set of difficulties. However, our group was proactive in setting clear communication channels, defining responsibilities, and establishing regular check-ins. By maintaining open and transparent communication, we were able to address issues as they arose and adapt our approach to accommodate everyone's needs. Contributions to the Group Assessment In the group assessment, our team was responsible for evaluating and proposing a sustainable roofing and internal finishes solution for a non-residential construction project. We divided our responsibilities among the team members, and I was tasked with researching and presenting the roofing options. My contributions to the group assessment included:
Researching Roofing Solutions: I conducted in-depth research into various roofing materials and techniques, considering their durability, energy efficiency, cost-effectiveness, and sustainability. I collected data on the pros and cons of each option, which served as a foundation for our group's recommendations. Presentation: I prepared a comprehensive presentation on the roofing solutions, showcasing the key findings and their implications on our project. This presentation included visual aids, data analysis, and cost projections, which helped our group make an informed decision. Collaboration: I actively participated in group discussions, offering insights and feedback on other aspects of the project, such as internal finishes and sustainability considerations. This collaborative approach ensured that we had a well-rounded proposal. Problem Solving: When challenges arose within the group, I contributed to finding solutions and maintaining a positive working environment. This included mediating conflicts and assisting in time management to ensure we met our deadlines. How This Subject Will Help in the Future Non-Residential Building has equipped me with a range of skills and knowledge that will undoubtedly be valuable in my future endeavors. Here are some ways in which this subject will be beneficial: In-Depth Understanding: The comprehensive knowledge of non-residential building construction, including structural systems, roofing, and internal finishes, will serve as a strong foundation for my future career in construction management or architecture.
