Critical Thinking Template
Scenario: Aaron and Merida are two students who attend Bryant & Stratton College. Their instructor asked them to identify three problems that could exist in different community types: academic, professional, and personal. They were also asked to brainstorm solutions for each of the problems.
They are now stuck and are unsure which solution is best for each scenario. All are plausible. Your job is to review each of the problems and then use critical thinking and problem-solving tools you have learned to suggest which solution they should choose. It would be okay to also include professional examples or experiences in your explanation, but personal opinions may not provide credibility to your solution on their own.
Academic Problem
In 150 words or more, use critical thinking and problem-solving tools to state the solution you chose, explain which tools or resources helped you analyze the problem and solution, and describe how this solution might solve the problem effectively compared to the other options. Answers should be in your own words, and any outside resources used should include a citation. Problem: Choosing a major
Solutions:
Choose the major that gets a job with the highest salary
Choose the major that is most interesting
Choose the major that seems to be the easiest program
Response: Choosing the major that is most interesting. You could choose the major that has the highest salary, but then realize that that major could be boring to you. Then that could cause you to hate the choice that you made. Choosing the major with the highest salary means that you could end up wasting your time on something that’s not interesting to you, causing you to have to start all over again with another major. You don’t always have to choose the major with the highest paying job, especially if it brings no fun to you. Don’t go for the easiest and quickest
major there is. Taking the easy way out is not always the answer, it could be fun and all but at the end of it, you wouldn’t want to continue in that field after a certain
amount of time. Always go with the major that is the most interesting to you, because you’ll learn and discover a lot more.
Workplace Problem

effectively compared to the other options. Answers should be in your own words, and any outside resources used should include a citation. Problem: Lack of training at work
Solutions:
Quit the job and find a new job that provides better employee training
Ask for a meeting with the team leader to discuss the need for more training
Try and find training opportunities outside of work (take classes, sign up for webinars, attend professional conferences)
Response: Don’t quit your job just because of the lack of professionalism in the training process. Doing this shows that you aren’t capable of learning things on your
own and that you do not want to put in the proper time to learn the job. Asking for a
meeting with the team leader could result in them firing you, or even telling them would only make you a laughingstock at the job for even telling on the one that has tried to train you. The person that is training you probably was trained the same way and the person who trained them so on and so on. I think that it would be best to try and find training opportunities outside of work. By doing this, you will show your team leader or boss that you have the skills that you need to do that job. Not only will they see that you have the skills that it takes for a job, but raises or promotions can come your way.
Personal Problem
In 150 words or more, use critical thinking and problem-solving tools to state the solution you chose, explain which tools or resources helped you analyze the problem and solution, and describe how this solution might solve the problem effectively compared to the other options. Answers should be in your own words, and any outside resources used should include a citation. Problem: A strained relationship with a family member due to an argument
Solutions:
Ask to have a conversation face to face to discuss the argument civilly
Text the family member to try and repair the relationship
Let the argument go, and try to move forward
Response: Texting the family member is something that doesn’t need to be done. Doing this can lead to miscommunication. Things can get interpreted the wrong way
because that family member doesn’t know the emotion or expression behind that message. Letting the argument go is another thing that you do not want to do. Just because you let that argument go, doesn’t necessarily mean that the family member would do the same thing. For example, you all could have a family function
and Keisha might go to some people and start talking about the situation that happened between you all. Then the people she told went to Mike and told him, now
Mike is coming to you about the situation that happened. But the person that told Mike added a little more than what happened because that’s what was told to him.
