SCS 100 Module Three Activity Template Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Support your responses with specific details and examples from your advertisements. You do not need to conduct outside research, but if you use sources, cite them using APA style. Describe how groups and/or cultures are presented in all your advertisements. Dove, Sky Witness: Empowering Idents o This ad shows many different women of all cultures and backgrounds, and these women are telling the viewer about their struggles and how they overcame them, all the while appearing comfortable and confident in their skin. Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o The Smaht Pahk advertisement shows a busy storefront street with limited and tight parking spaces with only a handful of people on the sidewalk. A man approached the group in a vehicle and showed them how the vehicle could park itself as he joined them on the sidewalk. Jeep: Groundhog Day - Bill Murray o This advertisement shows a man going on various adventures. It veers away from the group that it begins with. The leading actor is greeted by a group of men and a groundhog every day that starts over. The man proceeds to take the groundhog and go on various luxurious adventures. Stronger Together o There are many people in this advertisement. Throughout the ad, you can see various people painting and putting up Post-it notes, moving ladders, and then taking pictures in front of the mural. It is not clear if everyone is within the LGBTQ+ community or if they simply support it. Describe the representation of stereotypes in all your advertisements. Dove, Sky Witness: Empowering Idents o The stereotypes in this ad are gender, beauty, and disability stereotypes. By showing women who have overcome their disabilities, scars, discrimination of hair color, and tattoos and embracing these things are beautiful. Hyundai: Smaht Pahk o The stereotype here is that people from the city can’t park their cars. Jeep: Groundhog Day - Bill Murray o This ad utilizes only middle to upper-class men and activities, such as skiing. Stronger Together o There were no stereotypes in this advertisement. It was fast-paced or sped up to show the process from start to finish. The ad didn’t showcase one person over another. 1
Discuss how your beliefs, assumptions, and/or values may have influenced how you analyzed your advertisements. My beliefs, assumptions, and values played a large role in the advertisements I chose and how I analyzed them. A few examples are that I feel women would be empowered and that the LGBTQ+ community should be supported. Although I agree with the ads, it was hard to remind myself that that wasn’t the purpose as I found myself cheering for the women and the community and feeling a sense of pride for these people. The other two ads I chose were easier to analyze as I was less familiar with these luxuries. I had to pay attention to the message that the ad was trying to convey. The hardest part of analyzing the ads was simpy removing myself from them. 2
