Jamara Brooks Grand Canyon University EDU-315 Mrs. Tracy Scoggins-Martz 3/10/2024 Student and Community Advocate https://www.canva.com/design/DAF_Cw556oQ/kQqDpQDeMGR3cdBj012CDA/edit?utm_content= DAF_Cw556oQ&utm_campaign=designshare&utm_medium=link2&utm_source=sharebutton Transcript Good afternoon, my name is Jamara Brooks, and I am the Community Liaison Specialist here at Uniqly Made Academy in Miami, FL. Our school serves students in grades Pre-K to Fifth grade. The school enrollment to date is 258 students. UMA population is majority low-income families that send their children to school to get their basic needs met on top of receiving their education. According to the data, UMA has been struggling to meet the needs of their families and now want to take this time to set goals and expectations for the families that are served on a day-to-day basis. The proposal that is forthcoming will help address the family needs which will help strengthen the student’s environment and enact system changes with the help of the community. The school survey shows that students don’t have the extra help that’s needed at home. Most families are single parent households which require that single mom or dad to work long hours to provide for the family and those that do reside in two- parent households struggle with not having enough income because one parent is not working or looking for employment. This then trickles down to the student who may not have set schedules for bedtime or feeling uneasy because of the lack of. While the school can support students who are struggling during school hours, it is not as easy for students to get that same help when they are home. We have families that face technology issues, where there is no access to the internet at home. The school survey also asked families what they think that their students may need to be more successful in the academic setting and what they think that their students would benefit from? For example, would their student’s benefit from having the ability to check out devices and portable Wi-Fi boxes and have access to tutoring (before and after school). The school survey basically connects our families with opportunities to actively contribute to the school community, set student goals, and create strong home learning environments. Over 75% of our school is in low-income situations. As educators it is our responsibility to work together and determine what will make our students more successful, and then turning around and making sure that we can do our part in seeing them succeed. Community and family engagement is a commitment that is equally shared by all partners to support students' learning and development in school and at home. Community partnerships can help in three concrete ways to address the opportunity gap that plagues many low-income families. First, community organizations that are skilled at advocating can give our families political clout to fight for more equitable distribution of resources. Community members and our families here at UMA can serve as valuable mentors to students, and community organizations and UMA can collaborate to create meaningful after-school programs that are tied to students’ learning. In the end we all just want to make sure that our students here at Uniqly Made Academy achieve their goals and that we do our part in making it happen.
