MILESTONE THREE 1 6-2 Milestone Three Categorical, Time-series, and Spatial Data DAT 530 October 21. 2023
MILESTONE THREE 2 II. Data Visualization Strategy We will use visual elements to create three separate presentations to distribute collected data to target audiences. The first audience is the State budget office who has requested a visual PowerPoint presentation, the second audience is the State Emergency Agency who requested an interactive dashboard, and the last audience is the public community; state representatives requested a pamphlet and website for the public audience. o 1 st Audience - State Budget Office The PowerPoint for this visualization will be constructed with bar graphs and charts that show how much funding was used in past storm cases and disaster relief. Access to this data and presentation will allow the budget office to estimate and prepare emergency funding and response in these situations. The graphs should be colorful and bold to catch user attention while not distracting the audience and budget office members. The budget offices’ visualization will be created by using Tableau. Tableau is capable of creating a story that has interactive charts and graphs. The officials will be able to use this presentation to assist in their analysis to reserve and allocate stand-by emergency resources to the areas that are most impacted by disasters (Mercier, 2020). In order to deliver meaningful and useful information to the budget office, we must ensure the content of the presentation highlights key phrases and relevant data while keeping each slide short and to the point. There will be a maximum of 10 slides for this presentation with 1 minute spent on each slide, longer content could lose audience attention. The visualization design team and members of the budget office will meet frequently to offer presentation feedback and address any questions or
MILESTONE THREE 3 concerns. The design team’s email will also be provided to the budget office for any questions and concerns that may arise outside of these meetings. Once the presentation meets the government’s standards, an official meeting will be scheduled where the presentation will be presented to the entire budget office (Mercier, 2020). o 2 nd Audience - State EMA The Florida EMA will be receiving an interactive dashboard that will allow analysis of storm damage and allow the team to access storm risk. By studying this data and utilizing the dashboard, the EMA will be able to estimate/ predict certain storm damage and prepare emergency resources. This dashboard will be created with Tableau and will be presented in bold and bright colors that will be easily read. The colors for each county will be able to be selected to show how much was spent in previous years for cleanup in each county (West, 2020). The dashboard will be scaled to fit monitor size and will include text that provides headers and brief explanations. Meetings between the EMA and the design team will be established in order to submit feedback on the dashboard. At the meeting the design team will take down all questions, concerns, and requests the EMA has. The team will then use this feedback to make revisions on the dashboard (Mercier, 2021). o 3 rd Audience - Public Audience The pamphlet and website for the public community will both consist of the same information just in physical and electronic form. The intent of this presentation is to update the public on safety, damage, and allow access to emergency support.
