AERM 1345 Name ________________________ Airframe Electrical Systems Lab Project 3b Level 3 Objective: g. aircraft electrical systems 49. Install, check, and service airframe electrical wiring, controls, switches, indicators, and protective devices Required: Appropriate FAA Advisory Circulars Assigned aircraft or training aid Aircraft or component Manufacturer’s Service Information Hand tools prescribed by TCC Tool List Calculator Multi Meter Special tooling and equipment as provided Procedure: The student will Install, check, and service airframe electrical controls, switches, indicators, and protective devices Student will explain how to derate a control switch for installation in an electrical circuit Student will properly identify, install, check, and service a control switch in an electrical circuit and explain switch chatter. Student will properly identify, install, check, and service a circuit protection device in an electrical circuit Student will exhibit knowledge of installing, checking, and servicing switches, lamps, relays, solenoids, indicators, and circuit protection devices The student will inspect and check electrical wiring and equipment installations on shelves or racks and security of lock-in, integrity of shock mounting, and clearance from other equipment; check the plug-in connectors for proper mating and adequate engagement and assure that all requirements for cooling or ventilation are met. Student will install, check, and service break-away wire on a guarded control Switch Standard : Demonstrate sufficient manipulative skills to simulate return to service. Performance: Answer the following Question 1. What is the purpose of a switch? 2.6.5 Lab Project 4: AERM 1347 Page 1
AERM 1345 Name ________________________ Airframe Electrical Systems To complete the circuit flow. 2. What are the two categories of switches? Manual and remote. 3. Name the two categories of remote switches? Electronic and electrical. 4. Name the parts of a typical mechanical switch? Electronic and mechanical. 5. Define the acronym “NO”. Normally open 6. Define the acronym “NC”. Normally Closed 7. Switches are rated according to what? AC 43.13-1B/2B 8. Switches that carry 0.5 amps – 1.0 amps have contacts made of what material? Gold or silver 9. Switches that carry less than 0.5 amps have contacts made of what material? Gold or bifurcated gold 10. Switch contact ratings should be adequate for all _____ Load ______ conditions and applicable ____ Voltages ______, at both sea level and the operational altitude. 11. A ______ Sealed ____________ switch should be used if sulfide, moisture or any contamination is present. 12. A switch with ______ bifurcated ___________ contacts should be used if particle contamination is expected to reach the contacts. 13. Is it okay to use AC derated switches in DC applications? No it not 14. Switches with contacts made of ______ Gold _________ should not be used to control devices which have either a voltage less than 8 volts or a continuous current less than 0.5 amps. 2.6.5 Lab Project 4: AERM 1347 Page 2
AERM 1345 Name ________________________ Airframe Electrical Systems 15. Name two switch Electrical switches must be _____________ Derated ______________ when they are used with certain types of electrical loads to prevent arcing or welding action across contacts. requirements. 16. What is the derating factor for a switch used for controlling current in a lighting system? If the lighting system is 12 volts the factor would be 5 If the lighting factor is 12 volts the factor would be 8 17. Why are switches derated? Derated switches are important to obtain a reasonable switch efficiency and service life 18. In what type of circuits would you derate a switch? High rush-in circuits • Inductive circuits • Motors 19. What should the contact rating be for a switch used to control 5 amps going to a motor? Gold & Silver 20. When mounting a switch, “On” should be ____ Open _________ or _____ Power of ___. 21. Switches that can be operated inadvertently should/may be protected by the use of a __ red guard _. 22. Solenoids have __ movable __ core, while relays have a ________ Solid ______________ core. 23. What electronic device is used as a remote type switch?
