Experiment 1: Soil Composition – Breanna Van Ee 61% Introduction: In this lab the soil composition of three areas will be tested, and the factors that affect the composition of the soil dependent upon the location the sample is derived from. Soil composition is composed of layers of clay, silt, and sand with different areas containing varying amounts of each. In this experiment, samples from Cold Lake Alberta (all within 5km of each other) are obtained and filled with water, shook, and left to stand for 24 hours undisturbed. The sample areas include the side of a riverbank, a level grassy area at a playground, and a hill with an approximate 50° angle. This experiment tests the topography of the various sites. What is your hypothesis (your expected results)? Sites: Figure 1. Photo of where hill sample was taken from. The angle of the hill is approximately 50°. Describe the sites. What vegetation is at the site? What is the surrounding area like?
Figure 2 . Image of a level grassy area of a playground. The yard sample was retrieved here. Figure 3 . Image of where riverbank sample was taken, below the trees in this photo there is a small creek.
