Organizational Problem for: Western Forest Service
Analyst’s Name: Trazel K. Brown
Date: September 16, 2022
Problem Statement
Western Forest Service is having an issue with the Spruce Beetle. The Beetle has affected over 40% of the high-elevation spruce forest ecosystems. The subalpine Engelmann spruce tree is the choice for the beetles. The Spruce beetles can infest any spruce tree within their local inhabitant area, including the blue spruce. The Spruce beetle will generally infest fallen or injured trees when the population are low. If
the beetle population becomes too large the supply of downed trees will not be enough,
they will begin infesting heathy standing trees. They are more likely to move to live trees that are mature or over-
mature.
High-Level Requirements
Western Forest Service is needing to find good ways to limit the amount of Spruce beetles in the park. If the amount of the populations gets too high, they will start investing health mature trees instead of the dead and injured trees that are on the ground or have fallen over. If this problem continues to happen it could lead to a deforestation or a loss of the Spruce trees.
Types of Questions
Qualitative questioning is the best way to go about the problem. With qualitative questions we can find a
better way to limit the amount of Spruce beetles and bring back or making the quality of the forest better.
Questions
Will thinning out overly dense area of trees influence different ecosystems?
What will happen to all the infested, dead, and injured trees once they are taken out of the forest?
What other effects to the ecosystem will happen if using the preventative insecticide spray.
Key Audience(s)
The National Forestry should have the most information that will be essential for the problems that are occurring.
Delivery Method(s)
The best delivery method will be going through data bases that have the information for the problems the company is wanting to solve
Rationale
We are wanting to look further into the problem due to a wide range of secondary problems that could arise from trying to fix the current situation. The company would benefit from more proper investigation to find any studies that have had different outcomes when using the same methods that we are currently looking to use. We must look at all different avenues that could give better options or more details that need to be add to the process that we are wanting to take.
