Why do Boolean functions play a central role in hardware architectures? Computer hardware relies on the representation and manipulation of binary values. Boolean functions operate using binary inputs and outputs and this is why they play a central role in the specification, construction, and optimization of hardware architectures (Nisan & Schocken, 2005). Describe Composite Gates. Since all logic gates have the same input and outputs, they can be chained together, creating composite gates. The logic design is the art of interconnecting gates in order to implement more complex functionality, leading to the notion of composite gates. These gates are realizations of Boolean functions (Nisan & Schocken, 2005). Describe Multiplexer and Demultiplexers? What is the importance of the use of the selection bit and the data bits? A multiplexor is a three-input gate that uses one of the inputs (selection bit) to select and output one of the other two inputs (data bits). This gate uses several data inputs to generate a single output (Nisan & Schocken, 2005). A demultiplexer does the opposite function of a multiplexor. This gate takes a single input and channels it to one of two possible outputs according to a selector bit that specifies which output to choose (Nisan & Schocken, 2005). Selection and data bits control which values are selected within multiplexers and demultiplexers. Selection bits specifically aid the input that determines the output.
