Project:
Series Circuit
Objectives:
a)
Verify the relationship of current, voltage, and resistance in a series circuit.
b)
Apply Ohm’s Law to the relationship of current, voltage, and resistance in a series circuit.
c)
Demonstrate the proper method to take readings using electrical measurement instrumentation.
Materials:
Wooden Project Board
Clamp-on Multimeter
#14 project wire
Single pole switch
(2) Keyless Lamp Sockets
120 volt / 60-watt incandescent lamp
Safety Glasses
120 volt / 100-watt incandescent lamp
120 volt Power Supply
120 volt / 15-amp Whip

NOTE:
You will be working on an energized circuit. Make sure all safety procedures are utilized before beginning any project assembly and testing.
Procedure 1
: 1.
Draw a diagram of the circuit for this project as shown in Figure 1
.

Once your diagram is complete, have it approved by your instructor.

Using the multimeter, take cold resistance readings for each of the 120-volt lamps and record these values in Table 1
.

With approval from your instructor, obtain all your materials and wire up the project. Place the loads in any order you choose for the circuit.
5.
Once the wiring is complete, obtain approval from the instructor to energize the project. 6.
With the circuit energized, take all amperage and voltage readings as indicated for the circuit shown in Figure 1
. Record these readings in Table 2

Once all readings have been taken, de-energize the project and disassemble the project board.
8.
Using the voltage and amperage values from Table 2
, use Ohm’s Law to calculate the wattage for each lamp and record these in Table 3
.
9.
Using the voltage and amperage values from Table 2
, use Ohm’s Law to calculate the resistance for each lamp and record these values in Table 4
