Amanda Do Professor Boswell English Composition 1 6th November 2022 Identity in Literature “Se Habla Espanol” by Tanya Maria Barrientos This story was about her own personal experience of not being able to fit into society. Tanya moved to America thinking that if she acted American and looked more American she would fit into society's standards at that time. Soon modern-day society started to embrace different cultures and Tanya found it hard to fit back into her culture because she lost touch with it for so long. “Mother Tongue” by Amy Tan Growing up Amy’s mother depended on her to speak on the phone for her because her mother’s English was not so good. Even though Amy understood her mother’s broken English other people never could understand. Amy called her mother's broken English her, “Mother Tongue” Even now when she is older she sometimes catches herself speaking in her, “Mother Tongue”. “Formation of a Caribbean Illustrator” by Nicole Miles Nicole when young was introduced by her friend to a new world of manga. She wanted to be a manga creator and started practicing drawing. She drew beautifully and was very inspired by the manga characters she saw in the manga but there was one issue people soon started to ask why she didn’t draw black characters. But there weren’t many examples of black manga characters for her to reference. She soon realized that there isn’t much diversity in manga and became the person to bring that idea of having more diversity to reality.
“Identity” Identity is the distinguishing character or personality of an individual. I am very proud of how far we have come in beating these stereotypes of one identity being a certain way. If we think about how identity was seen back then and compare it to today it is a big difference. We have come to value one identity over the past years. Society has grown to embrace each other's identities and accept one another. I think in the early stages of life we grow to make our own identities. We get to choose what we want to be and identify as. We don’t have to follow some social norm in order to be accepted as an individual anymore. We get to make our own choices find ourselves and find our place in the world. I think there is no end to discovering one’s identity I think every day we learn something new about ourselves and it changes us. Even to this day I still think I haven’t fully found and learned my full potential identity. Poet Ali’s ted talk was truly inspirational. I think language has to do a lot with our identities. Like what poet Ali said if we could relate to what he said we are speaking the same language as he is. But how could we be speaking the same language, well we are speaking the same language because we are able to connect with each other based on experience. Language is a way to connect with each other and in some way communicate. Language is a big part of my identity because I grow up in a family where most of my elders don’t speak English and I know a little Vietnamese but am not fluent. We can have a normal conversation but if I have to deeply explain something I have a hard time. I would say even though my grandparent doesn’t communicate or say I love you they show it more than say it. For example my grandma every time my family and I come over to visit she makes food for us showing how much she loves us. We are able to connect and communicate with each other. I feel language and communication with loved one and family makes up a great deal of my identity. I will always identify myself as a family person who loves and cherishes my family. I think every event that we experience in our life good or bad has a reason to happen. It shapes our identity and makes us who we are. Growing up I was more of the fat one out of me and my sister. My sister was tall and skinny and I was the short and chubby one. In Asian beauty, you have to be skinny, pale, and tall to be seen as beautiful or pretty so I tried to be that. I tried to lose weight and grow taller by
doing stretches but it never seemed to work. Being criticized all the time really put me in a dark place during my teenage years and for one year I went silent. Yes, I talked here and there but while at school I never talked to anyone. Never made friends and just stayed silent. I stayed silent because I was afraid once I started talking I would get made fun of or criticized. After the year of silence passed, I took time off of social media and focused on myself. I don’t know what triggered my brain to decide to start focusing on me but it worked. It was like an eye-opening moment. I finally started to find myself and who I am. For the first time in a while, I started to feel comfortable in my own skin. I felt like during that time of not talking and being scared of social interactions I kinda lost myself and my identity. I don’t regret the bad things that happened to me because They shape my Identity and shape the person that I am today. Overall our identities are really important to us and we must not forget them. Surrounding ourselves with people who speak the same language and people that we connect with really helps with finding ourselves. Past experiences bad or good also shape who we are. We have to embrace the past and move forward. Lingering in the past just causes a halt in finding your identity. We should look at past experiences that shape is. I think just being surrounded by love and good energy is a good step in finding your full and truest identity.
